About Us
The Financial Ombudsman Service is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that plays a vital role in UK financial services. Every day we help resolve disputes between consumers, or small businesses, and their financial service providers.
What You’ll Do
- Provide clear written responses to customers looking for answers to enquiries which are often demanding.
- Be confident speaking to individuals over the phone to help them understand how we’ve processed their information.
- Review large amounts of information relating to different product areas daily.
- Be excellent at paying attention to detail so that we won’t disclose information that we shouldn’t be – in line with the legislation.
- Get to grips quickly with our processes and redaction tools – so that requests are handled promptly and appropriately.
- Make balanced and measured decisions about what information to share with a customer and what to withhold – and your rationale will be documented in a structured way – so that we’re able to justify the way we’ve processed requests to customers and the regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
- Spot complicated or sensitive requests and work with colleagues across the organisation to give the right response.
- Be on the lookout for best practice, always considering how we can use the latest developments to continuously improve how we deal with information requests.
- Work flexibly across the team when demand requires so.
Minimum Criteria
- Experience in a similar role focused on data protection, GDPR compliance and SAR requests, ideally including employee SAR requests
- Demonstrable experience dealing with service complaints
- Customer service experience
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess risks and provide solutions

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
