Role Overview

Working in the Technology department, the Infrastructure Engineer will report to the Group Head of Technology and Innovation, with responsibility for engineering and managing technology infrastructure in NxGen Studio and Sky Creative. The primary purpose of the role is to innovate, architect, deliver and support best-in-class platforms for the Design, Promotions Campaign teams.

Operating with a high degree of autonomy the Technical Manager will take ownership of technical challenges translating concepts into functional designs and contribute to the implementation of new solutions while developing existing platforms to meet the requirements of Sky Creative’s post-production teams. They will assess future technology needs across the business and deliver efficiencies through modern engineering practices.

This includes migrating on-premises workloads to the cloud, utilizing infrastructure-as-code to automate deployments maintaining virtualized environments that support intensive creative workflows. The Technical Manager will collaborate closely with internal technology teams at Sky and external partners to deliver robust, scalable technology that works within the wider business and strictly adheres to modern security and networking requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect & Implement Solutions: Take ownership of operational bottlenecks or broad business requirements, independently research technical details design highly effective infrastructure solutions for Sky Creative.
  • Cloud Migration & Management: Lead the migration of on-premises workloads to the cloud, evaluating and deploying to AWS, Azure, or GCP depending on which platform provides the best architectural fit for the project.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Utilize deployment and configuration management tools (such as Terraform and Ansible) to build, automate scale infrastructure.
  • Creative Pipeline Support: Oversee and optimize the compute and rendering infrastructure for high-end VFX and broadcast graphics workflows (including Cinema4D, AWS Deadline Cloud, Foundry Nuke Houdini).
  • Systems Administration: Manage, troubleshoot optimize a mixed-OS environment encompassing Windows, macOS and Linux systems.
  • Continuous Improvement: Research and test the latest technology, continuously evaluating how to optimize media production workflows and improve system reliability.

Essential Criteria

  • Engineering Autonomy: A proactive, self-starting approach with the ability to take an idea or problem, define the technical requirements drive the solution to completion.
  • Cloud Architecture: Hands-on experience with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and a strong understanding of cloud architectural best practices (e.g., the AWS Well-Architected Framework).
  • Automation & Scripting: Professional experience with infrastructure deployment and configuration management tools (ideally Terraform and Ansible), alongside practical knowledge of interacting with REST APIs.
  • OS Expertise: Strong systems administration skills across Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
  • Networking & Security: A solid grasp of core networking protocols and modern IT security best practices.
  • Communication & User Relations: Excellent ability to translate complex technical information clearly to both engineering colleagues and non-technical creative stakeholders. Must be personable, approachable and capable of working closely with end-users to understand their workflows, troubleshoot effectively and build strong collaborative relationships.

Desirable Skills And Experience

  • Previous experience working in Media & Entertainment, Broadcast, or Post-Production technical roles.
  • Familiarity with VFX software pipelines, render farms creative tools (e.g., Maxon software packages, Foundry Nuke, Houdini, VizRT).
  • Professional knowledge of Hypervisor and VDI platforms.

How You’ll Work

We've adopted a hybrid working approach to give more flexibility on where and how we work. The hybrid working expectations for this role are 3 days in the office per week.
