Senior IT Infrastructure Support Engineer

Location: Doncaster, United Kingdom

About the Role

This exciting role focuses on back-end IT infrastructure support, ensuring seamless delivery for both internal and external Thales businesses. You will be responsible for the installation, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of servers, storage, and other IT infrastructure components. This includes adhering to agreed designs, timelines, and budgets while providing detailed design documentation and maintaining run books.

The role requires a strong technical understanding to support project requirements while balancing customer needs, budgets, and deadlines. An emphasis on documentation, process adherence, and quality delivery is essential. We are seeking motivated self-starters who contribute positively to our team and Thales as a whole.

In this role, you will actively engage in:

Key Responsibilities

  • Spearhead tasks as assigned by the Work Package Manager within your capabilities.
  • Design and implement technical solutions to meet customer specifications and project milestones.
  • Independently or collaboratively support new and existing infrastructure changes, ensuring alignment with project goals.
  • Create, maintain, and update system documentation, including design specs and run books.
  • Identify and report opportunities for system improvements and root-cause analysis.
  • Provide problem-solving and troubleshooting to ensure smooth system operations.
  • Obtain and analyse technical information to resolve complex, escalated issues.
  • Escalate issues when required, supporting in resolution.
  • Engage in occasional out-of-hours work as необходима.
  • Stay updated on technical advancements, including the latest server and storage technologies.
  • Implement service improvements through technical decisions and operational adjustments.
  • Contribute to Service Transition processes and cross-team collaboration.
  • Develop and maintain accurate technical records and databases.

Typical Duties

  • Attending project meetings – Kick-offs, sprints (Agile/Scrum), status reviews.
  • Creating or contributing to Detailed Design Documents.
  • Raising and managing Request For Changes (RFCs).
  • Updating administrative and operational documentation.
  • Setting personal career development goals, expanding your expertise in key areas.
  • Proactively responding to support requests & project requirements with decisive action.

Person Specification

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree OR minimum 3 years of experience in a third-line support or project delivery role.
  • Strong ability to work effectively with colleagues and communicate clearly at all levels (technical and non-technical).

Technical Skills

  • Windows Server (2003—2022): Core functions including DHCP, DNS, PKI, Active Directory (AD).
  • Virtualisation Technologies: VMware (NSX, vCenter, Aria Operations).
  • Storage Solutions: NetApp enterprise storage systems.
  • Automation and Scripting: Linux environments (Red Hat, Puppet, Satellite, Ansible, Identity Management/IDM).
  • IT Service Management: Operation in large-scale managed estates, familiarity with standardised processes.
  • Process Improvement: Experience in refining workflows, tools, or methodologies.
  • Linux Operational Expertise: Highly desirable to complement additional environments.

Soft Skills & Work Practices

  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Familiarity with automated IaC (Infrastructure as Code) principles, scripting, and toolchains.
  • Ability to diagnose failures, identify trends, and propose corrective support measures.
