**Infrastructure Support Engineer – The National Archives

Job Overview

  • Salary: £40,000 per annum
  • Contract type: Permanent

The Opportunity

We’re expanding our Infrastructure Team and seeking two engineers to build and maintain the backbone of the UK’s digital records—ensuring reliability, security, and accessibility for public and operational services.

You’ll work in a well-established team, supported by experts who share knowledge as we grow. This hands-on role sits at the heart of long-term trusted access, supporting cloud and on-prem environments.


The Role

Responsibilities

  • Build, support, and improve infrastructure across cloud and on-prem platforms, including Azure, AWS, and Microsoft 365.
  • Provide second/third-line incident escalation, focusing on service recovery and high availability.
  • Ensure reliability, performance, and continuous improvement of platforms underpinning our digital archiving and public-facing services.
  • Collaborate across teams to enhance service resilience, growth, and customer trust.
  • Contribute to change management, delivery projects, and operational excellence.

Flexible & On-Site Work:

  • Primarily hybrid role, with rarely 60% of work on-site at our Kew office.
  • During the one-year probation, minimum 4 days on-site per week are required.
  • Shared-saturday rotation applies (approximately one Saturday each month, paid at overtime rates).

Job Description – In Detail

Job Purpose

This role will design, administer, and maintain the physical and virtual infrastructure underpinning The National Archives’ core services. Working within a collaborative team, you’ll:

  • Deliver services aligned with industry standards and organisational SLA objectives.
  • Act as a second/third-line escalation point for incidents, coordinating resolution across teams.
  • Advising stakeholders on technology costs, availability, functionality, and service trade-offs.
  • Partner with technical architects and projects to ensure long-term sustainability and improvement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Infrastructure Support

  • Build, deploy, and support enterprise-grade technology spanning:
    • Cloud (Azure, AWS, public SaaS such as Microsoft 365)
    • Desktop services & distribution (Group Policy, Configuration Manager, Intune)
    • Network and virtualisation (LAN/WAN, VoIP, Wi-Fi, backup, licensing, storage)
    • On-prem security (firewalls, IDS/IPS, compliance audits).
  • Resolve complex incidents with logical troubleshooting and transparency.
  • Collaborate with internal and third-party suppliers, negotiating services to meet SLA.

2. Change and Scalability

  • Intervene in change control processes, ensuring minimal disruption and technical soundness.
  • Assist in technology migrations (e.g. Microsoft 365, multi-cloud hour consolidation).
  • Candidate-led problem analysis to aim short-term fixes toward proactive solutions.

3. Security and Reliability

  • Apply government-grade security policies and adhere to face controls.
  • Back up, disaster-recover, and audit services with metadata integrity in mind.

Essential Criteria

✅ Expertise in cohesive infrastructure support, spanning:

  • Cloud IaaS/PaaS (Azure & AWS)
  • Microsoft cloud/on-prem integration (Windows Active Directory, Group Policy, Entra ID, Intune).
  • backup/filesystems, on-prem virtualisation. ✅ Projects delivered to time and budget with structured governance. ✅ Hands-on knowledge of security controls/protocols, incident documentation, and company breaches (or GDPR/FOIA-equivalent). ✅ Critical thinking, scripting tools, automation, and structured problem-solving.
