Infrastructure Engineer
Senior Infrastructure Engineer or Technical Lead
Location: Doncaster, United Kingdom
About the Role
At Thales, we deliver extraordinary technology solutions that support national security and foster social value in the UK. This role focuses on the design, installation, configuration, and ongoing support of backend IT infrastructure, supporting both internal and external Thales businesses.
You will work on server, storage, and other IT infrastructure components, ensuring they align with agreed designs, timelines, and budgets, while contributing to design documentation and maintaining operational runbooks.
This position demands a balance of technical expertise and process adherence, ensuring consistent quality output. Candidates must be motivated, collaborative, and committed to best practice, leveraging emerging technologies to deliver projects and through-life support effectively.

Key Responsibilities
As part of your role, you will:
- Complete tasks assigned by your work package Manager within your capabilities.
- Design and implement technical solutions in line with customer specifications.
- Work autonomously or in teams to support new and existing infrastructure or technical changes.
- Document current systems, enhancements, and proposed solutions.
- Identify and report opportunities to eliminate system inefficiencies.
- Resolve complex problems efficiently through troubleshooting and issue diagnosis.
- Escalate problems when necessary and assist in escalation resolution.
- Engage in occasional out-of-hours work, where required.
- Stay updated on technical and service advancements, including server and storage technologies.
- Support service transition processes and collaborate with cross-functional teams to diagnose and resolve IT issues.
- Maintain accurate records and corporate documentation.

Typical routines include:
- Attending project meetings (e.g., kick-offs, scrums).
- Creating or contributing to Detailed Design Documents.
- Raising Requests for Changes (RFCs) as necessary.
- Updating system documentation (including runbooks, service designs, etc.).
- Continuously extend your technical knowledge and skill set proactively.
- Respond promptly to technical and project issues as they arise.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 3 years’ experience in third-line support or project delivery.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively at all levels (technical, project, and stakeholder).
- Experience in improving processes and tools to enhance efficiency.
- Fault diagnosis and resolution skills for troubleshooting IT infrastructure issues.
- Extensive experience working with:
- Windows Server (2003–2022) and its core functionalities (e.g., DHCP/DNS/PKI/Active Directory).
- Platforms & technologies, including:
- VMware (NSX, vCenter, Aria)
- NetApp storage solutions
- Linux (ethos including:
- Red Hat
- Puppet/Satellite
- Ansible
- Identity Management)
- Familiarity with working within a large managed IT estate.
- Understanding of Agile methodologies and best practices.
- Exposure to automation principles and scripting languages.
