I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About The Job

The Google Public Sector, Technical Delivery and Operations team delivers, operates and secures private cloud services. We aim to provide the flexibility, reliability, and scalability of public cloud for customers with exceptionally high security requirements that can only be met in a private cloud environment. We deliver and operate these private cloud deployments for the most critical customers, helping scale, secure and maintain the deployment whilst working closely with Google product teams to continually improve our technology. This role is part of a new team focused on meeting the needs of our most critical customers in the UK.

As an Infrastructure Operations Engineer, you will be deploying new infrastructure as our deployments scale, rolling out new features and updates, troubleshooting problems, and managing incidents. In line with Google’s standard engineering practices, you will automate common tasks, manage incidents and conduct blameless retrospectives to avoid the same problems happening again. You will work with local support staff to help them with challenging problems and you will reach back into Google’s product teams for help where you need it.

You will troubleshoot technical problems with a mix of debugging, networking, system administration and coding/scripting skills. If necessary, you will update our playbooks, not just to help our UK team but to help similar teams around the world. You will help drive the success of Google Cloud by understanding and advocating customers issues. This will include a need to sometimes work non-standard work hours and participate in an on-call rotation.
