Inspector – Healthcare within Justice (Ref: 250657)
Post Type: Permanent Hours: Full-Time (36 hours per week) Salary Range: Band 7 – £52,845 – £61,466 per annum Location: Edinburgh/Glasgow, with hybrid working for the foreseeable future
About the Role
An exciting opportunity arises for an enthusiastic and proactive individual to support a national programme of healthcare inspections in Scottish justice settings, collaborating with the HM Inspectorate of Prisons for Scotland (HMIPS) and HM Inspectorate of Constabulary in Scotland (HMICS).
The role involves leading and contributing to the planning and delivery of inspections and reviews across a range of justice settings, including prisons and police custody, ensuring high-quality care. Key responsibilities include:
- Communicating complex, sensitive, and sometimes contentious information clearly—both verbally and in writing.
- Building constructive working relationships with service providers, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
- Ensuring patients and justice-involved individuals receive assured, high-quality care through evidence-based practices.

The post sits within the Healthcare within Justice team, part of the Quality Assurance and Regulation Directorate (QARD) at NHS Scotland.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead or contribute to inspections and regulatory visits in healthcare settings within the justice system.
- Identify opportunities for improvement and facilitate change through targeted support and feedback.
- Collaborate with HMIPS, HMICS, and other inspectorate teams to align inspection efforts.
Requirements
Essential
✔ A relevant clinical qualification in mental health (e.g., Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) or an Allied Health Professional such as an Occupational Therapist). ✔ A degree-level qualification or equivalent professional experience. ✔ Ability to communicate complex issues clearly in both written and verbal formats. ✔ Commitment to direct patient interaction and evidence-based practice.

Desirable
🔹 Prior work experience in prisons, police custody, or secure care environments. 🔹 Experience supporting individuals affected by mental health conditions or substance misuse. 🔹 Knowledge of complex and vulnerable populations within justice settings.
Essential Management Requirements
X Mandatory completion of Personal Protection Training (PPT) due to security-sensitive working environments.
