Inspector of Ancient Monuments
Overview
Our client is seeking an Inspector of Ancient Monuments to join their Regional Development Advice Team on a full-time, two-year fixed-term contract. This role can be based in Manchester, York, or Newcastle, with hybrid working available. The successful candidate will provide expert advice on proposals for change within the historic environment, with a particular focus on Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, major development, scheduled monuments, archaeology, and historic environment planning.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced heritage, archaeology, or conservation professional to influence sustainable decision-making, support the protection and management of ancient monuments, and contribute to the effective stewardship of the historic environment.
Responsibilities
- Deliver statutory and non-statutory advice relating to proposals for change in the historic environment.
- Take delegated responsibility for advice within areas of professional competence, particularly Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, major development, scheduled monuments, archaeology, and historic environment planning.
- Apply constructive conservation principles to advisory work.
- Provide expert guidance to developers, owners, local authorities, planning bodies, and other stakeholders.
- Support the sustainable management of the historic environment through proactive advice and engagement.
- Contribute specialist insight to infrastructure development matters.
- Provide advice to senior infrastructure stakeholders where specialist expertise adds value.
- Work collaboratively with regional development advice colleagues and wider teams.
- Engage with communities and stakeholders to support the care and management of historic places.
- Represent professional advice clearly and constructively in discussions, negotiations, and formal processes.

Requirements
- Significant experience managing change to ancient monuments, including through the planning system.
- Experience dealing directly with members of the public.
- Strong knowledge of the conservation, management, and presentation of ancient monuments.
- Good understanding of relevant government policy, guidance, and statutory procedures for the historic environment.
- Knowledge of Scheduled Monument Consent processes.
- Strong negotiation and influencing skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond constructively to challenge.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to advise a range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Professional judgement and confidence when handling complex heritage planning matters.
- Interest in sustainable development, heritage protection, infrastructure planning, and constructive conservation.
