About Us

Established in 1983, PCM is a third-generation, family-owned engineering business with a deep-rooted passion for precision measurement. We work at the forefront of load cell manufacture, strain gauge installation, and force calibration, combining decades of experience with the latest technologies to deliver solutions that are genuinely best in class on a global scale.

Over more than 40 years, we have continually reinvested in our people, facilities, and capabilities. This sustained commitment has equipped us with the expertise and infrastructure required to solve some of the most complex, unique, and demanding measurement challenges across a wide range of engineering sectors.

Our reputation is built on uncompromising quality, technical rigour, and absolute confidence in traceability. Underpinned by our ISO 9001 and UKAS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditations, our skilled team is trusted by industry leaders worldwide to support their most critical operations, where accuracy and reliability are non-negotiable.

Following a recent rebrand, PCM is now entering an exciting phase of growth. This expansion forms part of our long-term ambition to become the undisputed global leader in load measurement, and we are actively strengthening our technical team to support that journey.

About the Role

As an Instrumentation & Control Engineer within PCM’s highly regarded technical team, you will play a central role in supporting the design, manufacture, and delivery of high-precision load measurement solutions. Working closely with production, calibration, suppliers, and customers, you will contribute across the full project lifecycle - from initial concept and quotation through to manufacture, calibration, and data capture out in the field.

This role combines detailed engineering design with hands-on instrumentation expertise. In addition to generating high-quality CAD models, drawings, and technical documentation, you will act as PCM’s internal specialist for instrumentation and control, supporting both day-to-day internal operations and customer applications, alongside cutting-edge research and development. Accuracy, methodical working practices, and a strong systems-level understanding will be essential, as your work directly underpins the performance, reliability, and traceability of our products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, amend, and maintain CAD models and detailed engineering drawings for load cells and strain gauge installations.
  • Produce, manage, and control Bills of Materials (BOMs), specifications, and build instructions for production technicians, to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Act as PCM’s specialist in instrumentation & control, supporting clients with the integration of our market-leading test equipment into their complex engineering systems.
  • Take responsibility for HBM data acquisition systems within our UKAS-accredited calibration laboratory.
  • Support the introduction and application of safety PLCs for safety-critical lifting and testing projects.
  • Liaise with customers and suppliers via telephone, email, and face-to-face meetings to provide technical installation support, recommendations, and fault diagnosis.
  • Support customers with test data processing, interpretation, and reporting.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive technical databases and engineering records.
  • Contribute to the development of technical whitepapers, application notes, and internal documentation.
  • Help maintain and evolve internal software tools and automated processes using MATLAB and VBA.
  • Develop new skills within a growing business, with opportunities to progress into a more advanced technical role, while working with state-of-the-art equipment.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
