Working alongside an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist and a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, you will provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment for adults experiencing acute mental health crises, with rapid assessment, crisis intervention and intensive home treatment in the community to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.

The Role

As a Speciality Doctor, You Will

  • Assess and treat adults experiencing acute mental health crises in community and clinical settings.
  • Work closely with the Consultant Psychiatrist in managing the Intensive Service caseload.
  • Participate in daily multidisciplinary handovers and weekly case review meetings.
  • Undertake urgent psychiatric assessments when required.
  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Support the multidisciplinary team with specialist medical advice and clinical leadership.
  • Deliver safe pharmacological management and physical health assessments.
  • Complete clinical documentation, reports and discharge planning.
  • Participate in CPA reviews and ongoing risk assessments.
  • Liaise with GPs, Community Mental Health Teams, Primary Care, Liaison Services and external partner organisations.
  • Support safe admission avoidance through intensive home treatment.
  • Facilitate smooth transitions between inpatient and community mental health services.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of acute mental health services in line with national best practice.
  • Receive Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) training and provide support when required in exceptional circumstances.

About the Service

The Intensive Service provides a 24-hour rapid assessment, crisis intervention and home treatment service for adults experiencing significant mental health difficulties.

Patients Are Typically Referred Through

  • Primary Care Liaison Services
  • Community Mental Health Teams
  • Memory Services
  • Mental Health Liaison Teams

The service delivers short-term intensive interventions designed to support recovery at home, prevent unnecessary admissions and facilitate timely discharge from inpatient services. Patients generally remain under the team's care for up to six weeks before transitioning to longer-term services where appropriate.

  • Daily multidisciplinary reviews
  • Crisis Resolution interventions
  • Home Treatment
  • Ongoing risk assessment
  • CPA reviews
  • Complex case formulation
  • Evidence-based treatment planning

The service also works closely with Social Care, Emergency Services, Drug & Alcohol Services and other community partners to provide coordinated crisis care.

Multidisciplinary Team

You'll work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team that includes:

  • Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Specialty Doctor
  • Team Manager
  • Mental Health Nurses
  • Support Workers
  • Administrative Staff
  • Community Mental Health Professionals

The team promotes collaborative working through daily clinical discussions, shared decision-making and regular multidisciplinary case reviews.

Person Specific Requirements

Essential

  • MBBS (or equivalent medical qualification).
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise (or eligibility at the time of appointment).
  • A minimum of four years' postgraduate medical training, including at least two years in Psychiatry (or equivalent experience and competencies).
  • Up-to-date knowledge of General Adult Mental Health services.
  • Excellent clinical assessment and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage complex clinical responsibilities.
  • Experience undertaking clinical audit and critically appraising research.
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork and high-quality patient care.
  • Commitment to teaching and supporting colleagues.

Desirable

  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych).
  • Section 12 Approval.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Research and publication experience.
  • Interest in quality improvement and service development.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate medical students.
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCME), or willingness to undertake one.
