Interim Head of Compliance – Mortgages | UK Lender | SMF16 | Hands-On
We're partnering with an established UK mortgage lender to appoint an Interim Head of Compliance on a hands-on basis. This is a delivery role, not a figurehead one - you'll roll your sleeves up, own the compliance agenda directly, and move at pace. The client needs someone in quickly to get under the bonnet of the control environment and provide senior compliance leadership through a period of strategic change.
The role
Reporting into senior management and holding SMF16 (Compliance Oversight), you'll take ownership of the firm's regulatory compliance framework across its prime and specialist residential lending book. The immediate priority is a rapid, robust review of the control environment, alongside providing sharp, pragmatic compliance advice as the business works through a set of significant strategic questions in the current rate environment.
This is a genuinely hands-on mandate - closer to the detail than a large-team oversight role. You'll be the person doing the thinking and the doing, not managing a big function from a distance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
