Interim Head of Indirect Tax

Interim Head of VAT (6-Month Fixed-Term Contract)

We are partnering with a leading international energy business to appoint an Interim Head of VAT on a 6-month fixed-term contract. This is a high-profile leadership opportunity for an experienced indirect tax professional to lead a sizeable VAT function and provide strategic support during a period of transformation and growth.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Head of Tax, you will take ownership of the VAT agenda across a complex, highly regulated organisation. Leading a large team, you will provide strategic direction, technical expertise, and commercial support across operational, project, and transformation activities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the VAT function and managing a large, high-performing team
  • Acting as the senior VAT adviser to the business and key stakeholders
  • Providing oversight of VAT across major infrastructure, energy, and business transformation projects
  • Advising on new business propositions, including emerging sectors and technologies
  • Driving VAT governance, risk management, controls, and process improvement
  • Supporting automation and transformation initiatives across the tax function
  • Managing HMRC relationships and overseeing VAT compliance and reporting
  • Collaborating with international and European tax teams on cross-border matters
  • Coaching and developing team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement

About You

We are seeking a commercially minded VAT leader with the credibility and experience to operate effectively within a large, complex organisation.

You will bring:

  • Deep UK VAT and indirect tax expertise
  • Proven leadership experience, managing and developing large teams
  • Strong experience within complex, regulated environments
  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills
  • The ability to balance technical excellence with pragmatic commercial solutions
  • Experience leading through change, transformation, or business growth
