I'm currently recruiting for an experienced Interim Lead – Local Plan to join a Local Authority on an initial 6-month contract, with strong potential for extension.

📍 Location: Dorchester/Dorset (3–4 days per week on site)
💰 Rate: TBD (Outside IR35)

The Role

This is a senior leadership opportunity for an experienced strategic planning professional to lead the delivery of a new Local Plan under the revised NPPF, alongside the development of a new Design Guide.

Reporting into senior leadership, you will:

  • Lead the delivery of the Local Plan programme and establish robust project management arrangements.
  • Drive progress across the Planning Policy function to ensure key milestones are achieved.
  • Manage a Planning Policy team of approximately 50 staff through the Service Manager for Spatial Planning.
  • Work closely with senior officers, Cabinet Members, and elected members to ensure successful delivery of strategic planning objectives.
  • Ensure resources are aligned to prioritise the successful production and adoption of the Local Plan.

About You

We're looking for someone with:

  • Significant senior-level experience in Strategic Planning within Local Government.
  • A proven track record of delivering and adopting Local Plans.
  • Strong experience influencing senior officers, statutory consultees, and key stakeholders on complex planning and transport matters.
  • Demonstrable leadership experience managing high-performing teams through change.
  • Excellent political awareness and experience working closely with elected members.
  • The ability to build credibility quickly and operate effectively at executive level.
