Mechanical Design Engineer (Intern) – Test & Calibration Instruments
Druck Ltd designs and manufactures a range of sensors and instrumentation products, trusted globally across industries such as aerospace, energy, and industrial test applications. Based in North West Leicestershire, our team of 600 employees collaborates in a dynamic, innovative environment focusing on cutting-edge technologies.
Our market-leading pressure sensors and instrumentation are used in extreme environments—whether in the stratosphere, underwater drilling, or industrial operations. Your work will contribute directly to these trusted technologies, from design development to product manufacture and market delivery.
About the Role
We are seeking an early-career Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Test & Calibration Instruments Team. You will design complex instrumentation products and pressure controllers for applications including:
- Aerospace ground support equipment
- Metrology
- Process control
- High-volume industrial test
Ideal candidates should thrive in a collaborative team environment, be proactive in technical problem-solving, and demonstrate an aptitude for continuous learning.
Responsibilities
- Product & System Design
- Develop and validate mechanical assemblies, fixturing, and enclosures for plastic and metal-based products, adhering to project deadlines and customer requirements.
- Create design documentation including:
- Mechanical drawings (components and assemblies)
- Hydraulic/pneumatic circuit diagrams
- System assembly drawings
- User manuals

Technical & Analytical Support
- Participate in FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and process mapping to mitigate design risks and optimise outcomes.
- Generate and review technical data, ensuring compliance with company standards.
- Present/review in technical and program reviews.

Project & Process Improvement
- Drive long-term efficiency gains in design processes.
- Initiate and implement design changes as required by internal procedures.

Manufacturing & Problem-Solving
- Support production troubleshooting with creative solutions.
- Maintain high standards of documentation and conformity evidence.

Stakeholder Collaboration
- Internal: Engage with sales, marketing, and remote engineering teams across continents.
- External: Interface with customers to clarify requirements and communicate solutions.
Essential Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Working towards a degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering (or related field).
- CAD Proficiency:
- Knowledge of 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks, Pro/Engineer, etc.).
- Ability to generate high-quality engineering drawings/specifications.
- Technical & Practical Skills:
- Strong theoretical and hands-on understanding of mechanical design.
- Knowledge of DFM (Design for Manufacture) and traditional manufacturing methods.
- Experience in technical team environments.
- Soft Skills:
- Analytical & problem-solving aptitude.
- Proven motivation, time management, and deadline compliance.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Software: Fluent in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Mindset: Willing to resolve issues independently but culturally adapt to structured guidance.

Desirable Experience
- PDM (Product Data Management): Familiarity with versioning tools.
- Additive Manufacturing: Knowledge of 3D printing methods and applications.
- Simulation: Basic FEA (Finite Element Analysis) or CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) skills.
- Electronics: Understanding of fundamental electrical components and systems.
- Plastics: Experience with plastic mould tool design and mould flow analysis.
- Pressure Measurement: Exposure to sensors, pumps, or pressure systems.
