Internal Communications & Engagement Lead

Salary - £33,201 (Rest Of England) £36,924 (London)

St John Ambulance works at the heart of communities, supporting and enabling them to access and receive physical and mental health first aid. We do this through developing and providing effective community response and outreach services (e.g. Ambulance response) and using our longstanding expertise to empower people with vital clinical skills and the confidence to use them (e.g. our Volunteers and Community Advocates, and Young Responders programmes).

Job Summary

Are you a strategic communications leader who thrives on engaging people through times of change and transformation? We're looking for an Internal Communications & Engagement Lead to play a pivotal role in shaping how we connect with our employees and volunteers across St John Ambulance.

Working closely with senior leaders across the organisation, you'll support the Internal Communications & Engagement Partner to deliver a strategic approach to internal communications, engagement and organisational reputation. You'll lead high-profile communication and engagement projects that help our people understand our priorities, feel connected to our purpose and play their part in delivering our ambitions.

As the leader of our internal communications and engagement function, you'll inspire and develop a talented team while providing expert advice and coaching to managers and senior leaders. Your insight and influence will ensure communications are clear, timely and impactful, helping to build understanding, strengthen engagement and support positive organisational change.

About You

  • You're an experienced internal communications professional with a track record of delivering successful engagement strategies and campaigns.
  • You're an exceptional communicator who can translate complex information into clear, compelling messages for a wide range of audiences.
  • You build trusted relationships quickly and have the confidence to influence, advise and challenge senior stakeholders.
  • You're an inspiring people leader who enjoys developing others and creating a positive, high-performing team culture.
  • You thrive in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail and delivering high-quality work.
  • You understand how effective communication supports organisational change and know how to engage people through periods of transformation.
  • You're comfortable using a range of digital communication channels and tools, with experience of intranet platforms such as SharePoint and Microsoft 365.

About the Role

  • Lead the delivery of engaging, strategic internal communications that connect our people and volunteers to St John Ambulance's mission and priorities.
  • Partner with senior leaders to shape impactful communications that inform, inspire and support organisational change.
  • Manage and develop a talented team of Internal Communications and Engagement Advisors, creating an environment where people can thrive and grow.
  • Deliver high-profile engagement projects, including organisation-wide surveys, campaigns and internal events that strengthen colleague and volunteer engagement.
  • Champion our intranet and internal communication channels, ensuring the right messages reach the right audiences through the most effective platforms.
  • Measure the impact of communications and use insight and data to continuously improve engagement and communication activity.
  • Provide expert communications support during major organisational announcements, change programmes and crisis situations.
  • Help build communication capability across the charity by coaching managers and empowering teams to communicate confidently and effectively.
