I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

This role reports to the Head of Communications and sits within the Group Strategy and Marketing function. It works in close collaboration with the Internal Communications Manager - Business and the Content Executive as part of a joined-up IC team.

This is not a role about communicating what the business does day to day. It is about communicating what Shawbrook is - its culture, its values, its communities, its people and everything beyond the specific jobs colleagues do that makes Shawbrook what it is. The stories this role unearths will not only strengthen how colleagues feel about working here; they will feed Shawbrook's external channels, lift the lid on life at the bank and help build the kind of employer brand that makes Shawbrook a destination - a place people actively want to join and stay.

You will be a key communications partner for the Head of Culture and HR, working closely with them to plan and deliver everything from values communications and colleague lifecycle moments to people stories, internal campaigns and leadership content. Where the Internal Communications Manager - Business focuses on the operational flow of news and change, this role owns the thread that runs through the whole colleague experience - the sense of who we are, what we stand for and why it matters to work here.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in internal communications, employer brand, or culture/engagement roles - ideally with real experience partnering directly with HR or a Head of Culture, not just supporting from a distance.
  • This is a storytelling-first role, so the qualifying experience is a body of work, not a credential: look for people who can point to specific campaigns or content series they built from scratch - onboarding journeys, values campaigns, employee story series - and talk about how they landed, not just that they existed.
  • Experience across multiple content formats matters more here than in most IC roles - written, video, audio, social.
  • Financial services or another regulated sector is genuinely desirable but not essential - arguably more important is experience in an organisation with distinct sub-brands, hubs or business units, since Shawbrook's four hubs and seven brands make "one size fits all" culture comms hard to pull off.
  • Coaching experience with senior leaders (helping someone who's naturally guarded find their voice on camera or in writing) is a strong signal.
  • Type of person: warm, curious about people almost to a fault, comfortable being the one who asks the slightly personal question in a room. Someone who treats "boring" policy content (benefits, wellbeing, DE&I) as a creative challenge rather than an admin task.
