Internal Controls Analyst – FTSE 250 Business
We are seeking a motivated and technically strong Internal Controls Analyst, with experience in controls testing and supporting Risk and Control Self Assessments (RCSAs), to join our growing FTSE 250 business.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a dynamic environment and contributing to the effective operation of the internal control framework.
About the Role
Reporting to the Manager of Internal Controls, you will provide support in the implementation and maintenance of AJ Bell’s financial, operational, and compliance control environment.
You will assist with the implementation and ongoing monitoring of the Group’s internal control framework, with a primary focus on testing material and key controls. This role will work collaboratively with business stakeholders, senior leaders, and Risk Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct design effectiveness reviews of controls, create/review process maps, and work with the business and SMEs to resolve control design failures while monitoring remediation plans.
- Perform operating effectiveness testing of controls, provide outcomes and recommendations, and collaborate with the business to address root causes of control deficiencies and track remediation plans.
- Provide guidance and best practice advice to control owners on remediation activities and internal control improvements.
- Support the business with Risk and Control Self-Assessments (RCSAs), improving the maturity and effectiveness of the process.
- Support in developing control indicators and measures to assess control effectiveness.
- Support the implementation of continuous monitoring practices, including using data analytics to evaluate control effectiveness.
- Assist the business in navigating the new UK Corporate Governance Code requirements and applying them across processes and controls.
- Assist in preparing management information and compiling control assessment findings and recommendations for reporting to Executive and Board Committees.

Competence, Knowledge & Skills
The ideal candidate will have:
- Prior hands-on experience in risk, internal control, or audit—preferably in Financial Services.
- Competence in conducting design and operating effectiveness testing, documenting outcomes, and tracking remediation activities.
- Ability to produce well-structured written outputs while effectively communicating findings verbally to stakeholders.
- Comfortable contributing to proposals, providing recommendations, and collaborating with control owners to remediate weaknesses.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks, meet tight deadlines, and manage multiple responsibilities.
- An analytical problem-solving mindset, able to balance detailed technical work with a strategic approach.
- Ability to prepare reporting and management information for senior governance forums.
- Experience in assessing control design, reviewing process maps, identifying design failures, and overseeing remediation plans.
- Proficiency in operating effectiveness testing, including documenting controls, evaluating results, and recommending corrective actions using testing tools.
- Ability to provide practical guidance on remediation and internal control improvements; automation experience is an advantage.
- A disciplined approach ensuring evidence capture, clear workpapers, and connection to root cause analysis and remediation.
- Strong planning, organisation, and time management skills to meet prioritised deadlines.
