Job Description – IoT Subject Matter Expert (SME)
6 Month Contract
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced IoT Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide technical leadership in the design, deployment, security and operation of Internet of Things (IoT) platforms. The successful candidate will work across engineering, architecture and operations teams to deliver scalable, secure and resilient IoT solutions spanning edge devices, gateways, networking and cloud-native platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the technical authority for IoT architecture, platforms and best practices.
- Design and implement scalable IoT solutions supporting device connectivity, telemetry collection and edge computing.
- Develop secure device onboarding, identity management and certificate lifecycle processes.
- Design and support Kubernetes/OpenShift platforms hosting IoT services and edge workloads.
- Implement and manage IoT networking, including MQTT, AMQP, HTTP/HTTPS, TCP/IP, DNS, VPNs and secure communications using TLS/mTLS.
- Design service mesh architectures using Istio to secure service-to-service communication and traffic management.
- Develop Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Helm and GitOps tools such as ArgoCD.
- Build automation using Python, Go or Bash for device provisioning, monitoring and operational processes.
- Define observability standards using Prometheus, Grafana and logging platforms to monitor IoT platforms and connected devices.
- Support incident response, troubleshooting and root cause analysis across distributed IoT environments.
- Collaborate with security teams to implement Zero Trust principles, network segmentation and compliance with industry standards.
- Provide technical mentoring and guidance to engineering teams and contribute to architectural roadmaps.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience delivering enterprise IoT solutions.
- Strong Linux systems administration and troubleshooting skills.
- Deep knowledge of Kubernetes, OpenShift and container technologies.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
- Strong networking knowledge including:
- TCP/IP
- Routing and switching
- DNS
- VPN technologies
- Firewalls
- Load balancing
- MQTT
- AMQP
- HTTP/HTTPS
- TLS/mTLS
- Experience implementing service mesh technologies such as Istio.
- Knowledge of IoT edge computing and gateway technologies.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Helm, Ansible).
- Programming experience in Python, Go or Bash.
- Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and GitOps workflows.
- Knowledge of PKI, certificate management and device identity.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Desirable Skills
- Experience with Azure IoT Hub, AWS IoT Core or Google Cloud IoT.
- Experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ or other event streaming platforms.
- Knowledge of OPC-UA, Modbus, CAN Bus or industrial protocols.
- Experience with embedded Linux devices.
- Knowledge of IEC 62443, NIST IoT Cybersecurity Framework or ISO 27001.
- Experience working within manufacturing, utilities, energy, telecommunications or smart city environments.
