Police Staff Assistant Investigator (Major Crime Unit), Huntingdon, Cambs
Location: Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire SO1 Hours: Permanent Full-Time (37 hours/week) Salary: £37,020 per annum
About the Role
The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit (MCU) is part of the Joint Protective Services Directorate, responsible for investigating the most serious criminal cases across the tri-force area.
With two operational hubs—Hertfordshire Police HQ (Welwyn Garden City) and Cambridgeshire Police HQ (Hinchingbrooke, Huntingdon)—the MCU focuses on major offences including:
- Homicide (Murder, Manslaughter, Attempted Murder)
- Kidnap
- Blackmail and Extortion
This exciting permanent opportunity is for an Investigator to join the Northern hub (Outside Enquiry Team). You’ll work alongside a dynamic team of investigators with a high success rate, contributing to the vision, purpose, and values of the Unit.

Each day in the MCU brings variety, but here’s an overview of your primary duties:
- Taking statements from victims and witnesses
- Conducting house-to-house enquiries
- Scoping and reviewing CCTV footage
- Revising call data, mobile devices, and case evidence
- Assisting in building case files
- Acting as a Disclosure or exhibits officer for non-MCU crimes
- Giving court evidence
- Managing witnesses
- Training as a Family Liaison Officer (FLIO)
- Upholding the MCU’s vision, values, and policies
Essential & Desirable Attributes
We seek candidates with:

✅ Skills & Experience (desirable but not required):

Previous investigative experience or PIP 1 accreditation

Evidence of problem-solving and ** caballo** ability

Study abroad:
- 7-year UK residency (due to vetting requirements)
- Full UK manual driving licence
Core Requirements
Prior to employment, successors will submit:
- DNA mouth swab (for pre-employment contamination verification)
- Fingerprint elimination sampling (data stored securely under Data Protection Act 2018/GDPR).
