About the Role
The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit (MCU) falls under the Joint Protective Services Directorate, overseeing investigations across major criminal incidents in the tri-force area. The MCU operates from two hubs:
- Southern Hub: Hertfordshire Police Headquarters, Welwyn Garden City
- Northern Hub: Cambridgeshire Police Headquarters, Huntingdon (where this Full-Time Investigator role is based).
The MCU handles high-profile casework including (but not limited to):
- Homicide (Murder, Manslaughter, Attempted Murder)
- Kidnapping
- Blackmail
- Extortion
This is a unique opportunity to join a collaborative team of dedicated investigators targeting the most serious offences, renowned for achieving exceptionally high success rates.
The Police Staff Assistant Investigator undertakes directed investigations under supervision of a Senior Investigating Officer or designated line manager.
Team Structure
- Approximately six officers reporting to a Detective Sergeant.
- Part of the five Outside Enquiry Teams operating within the MCU.
Core Responsibilities
Daily duties are dynamic and varied; key activities include:
- Victim/Witness Engagement: Conducting and recording statements and evidence.
- Groundwork: Conducting house-to-house enquiries.
- Digital & Surveillance: Analytics of CCTV footage, communication data, and mobile devices (AFM, message records).
- Case File Preparation: Assisting in the documentation of investigative findings and file assembly.
- Exhibits & Disclosure: Acting as exhibits officer (for non-MCU work), managing witness testimony, and large-scale disclosure packages.
- Litigation Support: Giving evidence in court proceedings.
- Specialist Training: Developing skills as a Family Liaison Officer through mandatory training.

Criteria & Qualifications
Mandatory:
- Full, valid UK manual driving licence.
- 7+ years of UK residency (required for security vetting).
Desirable:
- Previous investigative experience or Police Initial Pipeline (PIP) accreditation.
- The MCU can train from scratch, though prior knowledge is a clear advantage.
Vetting Requirements:
- Full vetting approval, potentially including appraisal from current line manager.
- As a forensic specialist role, DNA mouth swab (reused contamination database) and fingerprint elimination sample (legally required) are mandatory.
