Investment Banking Associate – Mining & Metals

Overview

National Bank of Canada Capital Markets (“NBCCM”) is an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of National Bank of Canada (“NBC”). The main strategic purpose of NBCCM is to enable the NBC Group (“NBC Group,” meaning National Bank of Canada and all its subsidiaries) to grow and diversify its presence in Europe, Asia & MENA while allowing for a natural development of its existing business relationships and the establishment of new ones in the global markets.

NBC has over 150 years of history and is currently the 6th largest Canadian bank. Through its branch and subsidiary network, NBC can service clients throughout North America, Europe, Asia & MENA. NBC’s strategy is to further develop NBCCM as its hub for trading and financial services in Europe.

What We’re Looking For

National Bank of Canada Capital Markets’ Mining & Metals Investment Banking team is seeking an Investment Banking Associate to support deal execution and origination activities in London, UK. This role is suited to candidates with prior full-time investment banking experience, ideally covering the mining & metals or natural resources sectors.

As an Investment Banking Associate, you will play a key role in supporting transaction execution and industry coverage activities, gaining significant exposure to complex advisory and financing mandates. Responsibilities will progressively increase, offering strong development opportunities within a specialist sector-focused franchise.

Your Job

  • Support senior members of the Metals & Mining Investment Banking team on strategic advisory and capital markets transactions
  • Conduct financial, valuation, market, and industry analysis across the global mining & metals sector
  • Build and maintain financial models and assist in the preparation of client presentations, pitch materials, and transaction documentation
  • Participate in client meetings, due diligence processes, and transaction execution activities
  • Develop strong relationships with clients, advisors, and internal stakeholders
  • Stay informed on industry trends, commodity markets, M&A activity, and financing developments within the mining & metals sector

Basic Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in finance, economics, business, engineering, or other related disciplines with outstanding academic achievement
  • 2 - 4 years of experience in investment banking, transaction advisory, equity research, capital markets or other related roles (ideally covering the mining & metals sector)
  • Superior analytical abilities, including assessment of financial statements and financial modelling
  • Demonstrated problem-solving mindset, collaborative approach and great team spirit
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trusting relationships
  • Strong attention to detail with advanced proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with Bloomberg and Capital IQ would be considered an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Positive attitude with the ability to learn quickly
  • Self-starter and ambitious, with a strong work ethic
