IT Infrastructure Engineer

We’re recruiting an IT Infrastructure Engineer to join Milton Keynes City Council, supporting the systems and services that keep our organisation running effectively for local people.

At Milton Keynes City Council, we are dedicated, respectful and collaborative. Our ICT service plays a vital role in delivering reliable, secure and modern technology that enables colleagues across the organisation to provide essential services to our communities.

In this role, you’ll provide third line technical support and take ownership of key infrastructure systems, helping to maintain our server and desktop environment. Your work will underpin the day-to-day activities of ICT users across the council, ensuring systems are secure, resilient and performing well.

This is the role for you if you enjoy solving complex technical problems, working with a wide range of stakeholders and contributing to a reliable technology environment that supports our city.

This role may be suitable for home working, following an assessment. Home-based roles require a minimum of one day per week working from the office or site.

We’re recruiting into a number of ICT roles into our expanding team at Milton Keynes City Council. This is an opportunity to join our team, where your skills can make a real and lasting impact on the Council and the services we deliver.

Our teams keep critical systems running, protect data and design the digital tools our colleagues rely on every day.

Main Responsibility

  • Provide third line technical support across server infrastructure
  • Support and manage infrastructure platforms, including system configuration
  • Maintain core services such as security, compliance, messaging, patching and Microsoft technologies
  • Take ownership of support requests, diagnose faults and resolve technical issues
  • Work with service desk colleagues, service teams and users to ensure continuous service delivery
  • Support and maintain virtual infrastructure and security systems, including upgrades, backups and threat monitoring

The Ideal Candidate

  • Education: To A level, NVQ level three, BTEC, or equivalent in ICT, or relevant experience
  • Proven experience of virtualisation technologies and Windows server environments
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload effectively
  • Ability to analyse problems and provide clear, practical solutions
  • Experience translating technical information into plain English for colleagues
  • Ability to work independently and remain calm under pressure
  • A collaborative approach and a willingness to support wider team goals

Our roles and working arrangements

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’:

  • Site based’ roles can include up to two days per week working from home.
  • ‘Home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
