SME Support – Internal Audit Advisory (3 Audits)
Location: London (2–3 days per week) Contract Type: PAYE Contract Duration: August to November Eligibility: Must have the right to work in the UK
Overview
We are seeking an experienced business/operational internal audit subject matter expert (SME) to support a client team through the delivery of three audits.
This is not a hands-on audit delivery role, but rather, the successful candidate will provide advisory support, guidance, and coaching to an internal audit team transitioning from a compliance-based methodology to a risk-based internal audit approach.
The client requires a seasoned professional who can:
- Steer audit delivery and shape approach
- Identify gaps in methodology
- Educate the team in real time as audits progress

Key Responsibilities
- Provide SME oversight and advisory support across three internal audits
- Guide the team on applying risk-based internal audit methodology
- Review audit approach, scope, testing, and reporting, ensuring quality and alignment with risk-based principles
- Identify gaps, challenge thinking, and provide practical recommendations during audit delivery
- Coach and educate auditors on best practices in business/operational internal auditing
- Support the client’s shift from a compliance-led approach to a mature risk-based methodology
- Act as a trusted advisor to audit teams and stakeholders throughout the engagement
Required Experience
- Extensive experience delivering risk-based internal audits
- Strong background as a generalist business/operational auditor
- Deep expertise in non-financial services environments, including:
- Manufacturing
- Supply chain
- Tangible products
- Broader commercial/industrial sectors
- Proven track record in large, complex organisations, ideally FTSE 100 or equivalent
- Strong knowledge of internal audit methodology with the ability to advise, mentor, and identify gaps
- Experience operating as an SME advisor rather than a hands-on audit delivery resource
