If you're looking to start your career in IT Support, we have an exciting opportunity for an Apprentice IT Support Engineer to join our team at SSC Laser in Hixon.

Working alongside our IT Manager, you'll provide first-line support across the business, assisting with day-to-day IT requests as well as a variety of exciting projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support you in completing a Level 3 Information Communications Technician (ICT) Apprenticeship
  • Providing structured training, hands-on experience, and ongoing coaching

The Team You’ll Be Working In:

Working within the IT team, you will be an integral part of delivering a great service to internal colleagues. Besides your immediate peers, you will also work closely with all teams on a day-to-day basis to ensure that we deliver a great result for both the customer and our business.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Accurately log and resolve support calls from internal staff
  • Escalate support calls to the IT Manager in a timely manner where required
  • Liaise with external support providers
  • Carry out maintenance tasks as directed by the IT Manager
  • Check backups daily and resolve any issues
  • Order and setup new PCs and equipment ready for use on the company network
  • Support on Company-wide IT projects

Essential Skills, Characteristics, and Experience:

Need to Know:

  • Basic understanding of Windows 10 / 11 ideal
  • Good general IT knowledge
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of basic networking advantageous but not essential

Need to Have:

  • Keen interest in a career in IT
  • Experience of working with Microsoft Office
  • Driver’s license ideal due to rural location
  • IT related course or subject qualification
  • A good level of maths & English
  • Confidence to work with a range of people at all levels
  • A customer-focused approach

Need to Demonstrate:

  • Being knowledgeable - knowing your stuff, with an ongoing passion to learn and develop
  • Results focused - getting the job done and delivering what was promised
  • Effective Team worker & Communicator - working effectively with others to achieve a common goal

Course Contents:

  • Interpret and prioritise internal or external customer's requirements in line with organisation's policy
  • Apply the appropriate tools and techniques to undertake fault finding and rectification
  • Apply Continuous Professional Development to support necessary business output and technical developments
  • Operate safely and securely across platforms and responsibilities maintaining the security of personal data of internal and external stakeholders
  • Communicate with all levels of stakeholders, keeping them informed of progress and managing escalation where appropriate
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, customers, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Manage and prioritise the allocated workload effectively making best use of time and resources
  • Complete documentation relevant to the task and escalate where appropriate
  • Install or undertake basic software upgrades, either physically or remotely
  • Establish and diagnose the extent of the IT support task, in line with the organisation's policies and Service Level Agreements
  • Provide remote/F2F support to resolve customer requirements
  • Maintain a safe working environment for own personal safety and others in line with Health & Safety appropriate to the task
  • Identify and scope the best solution informed by the system data associated with the task
  • Test and evaluate the system's performance and compliance with customer requirements
  • Escalate non-routine problems in line with procedures
  • Use basic scripting to execute the relevant tasks for example PowerShell, Linux
  • Carry out routine maintenance across systems, (such as IT, Communications), ensuring organisational compliance at all times
  • Apply the necessary security, in line with access and/or encryption requirements
  • Use a range of Cabling or Connectors equipment in line with technical requirements for example physically or remotely
  • Test and evaluate network environments
  • Monitor performance and usage of a network
  • Deploy applications on a network
  • Set up storage and data access for staff
  • Apply necessary security measures, in line with access requirements to a network
  • Carry out routine maintenance across network systems, ensuring organisational compliance
  • Monitor network-related workloads including DNS and firewalls
  • Install or undertake basic upgrades, either physically or remotely
  • Establish digital communication or telecommunications systems through, for example cabling and connecting equipment
  • Identify a range of tools and or diagnostic equipment, for example, Hardware or Software components, to resolve Communications or Telecommunications requirements
  • Undertake basic telecommunications activities, in response to an allocated task, designated responsibilities, instructions, or customer’s requirements
  • Use information necessary to identify operational issues and rectify or escalate accordingly in line with policy

Qualifications:

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4/C)
  • Maths (grade 4/C)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

It is a requirement to have five GCSE 9-4 grades or equivalent (including English and Maths) to apply for this type of apprenticeship. If you do not have these grades but have completed numeracy and literacy Key Skills/Functional Skills at level two, you may also apply for these apprenticeships.

Eligibility:

You must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply for the role:

  • Have been a UK/EEA resident for the last 3 years
  • Hold valid residency status
  • Have the right to work in the UK
