Description
We’re looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to design and build robust, scalable microservices. You’ll work across the full backend stack — from API design through to production-grade integration testing — using modern Java and Spring technologies.
Mobility: Comfortable working from the Glasgow office 2 days per week.
Requirements
- Strong hands-on experience with Java 17+ and Spring Boot 3
- Proven experience building and maintaining microservices architectures
- Practical experience with Kafka (producers, consumers, event-driven patterns)
- Strong understanding of REST API design best practices
- Proficiency with Gradle for build management
- Familiarity with MapStruct and Feign
- Working knowledge of domain-driven design (DDD) patterns
- An integration-testing mindset — comfortable testing services in realistic, end-to-end scenarios, not just isolated units
Job responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend microservices using Java 17+ and Spring Boot 3
- Design and implement clean, well-documented REST APIs
- Build event-driven services using Kafka for asynchronous communication
- Apply domain-driven design principles to structure services around business capabilities
- Use MapStruct for clean object mapping and Feign for service-to-service communication
- Manage builds and dependencies using Gradle
- Write meaningful integration tests (not just unit tests) to ensure real-world reliability
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, maintainable code

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
