About The Role
We are seeking an experienced Java Developer to join a high-impact public sector programme supporting a critical UK government service. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on large-scale, complex systems within a highly regulated environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining Java-based applications that underpin essential government functions. The position requires a hands-on approach, with a focus on delivering reliable, scalable, and secure solutions that directly impact millions of users across the UK.
The role involves collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including system analysts, testers, and project managers, to ensure seamless integration and deployment of solutions. The Java Developer will play a key role in supporting legacy systems while contributing to modernization initiatives. The position is primarily remote, with the requirement to travel to Telford twice per month for meetings and collaborative sessions. The contract duration is six months, with a competitive daily rate of £550 (Inside IR35), and requires BPSS clearance.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in Java development, particularly with Spring Boot. Proven experience working within regulated environments, such as public sector or government projects, is highly desirable. Candidates should have solid SQL skills, including experience with PL/SQL or equivalent procedural database languages. Familiarity with batch processing and scheduling tools like CRON or TWS is essential. Additionally, candidates should have experience working in Unix/Linux environments and be comfortable with version control systems, especially Git. A proactive problem-solver with excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team is required. Prior security clearance or the ability to obtain BPSS clearance is advantageous but not mandatory.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain Java-based applications using Spring Boot framework to support critical government services.
- Support and enhance batch processing and scheduled job systems to ensure seamless data processing workflows.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues across application, database, and integration layers, ensuring high system availability and performance.
- Collaborate within controlled release environments, utilizing version control tools such as Git to manage code changes effectively.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including analysts, testers, and project managers, to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions.
- Contribute to the modernization efforts of legacy systems, ensuring smooth transition and minimal disruption.
- Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to maintain high standards of quality and compliance.
