Software Engineer - Backend, Java
Location: Bristol (Hybrid – 3 days per week) Salary: Up to £50,000 Industry: ClimateTech
Join Bohr and grow your backend skills while making a real difference—your software will help reduce methane emissions across Europe’s gas networks.
About Bohr
Bohr exists to decarbonise energy through innovation.
Through our methane emissions division, Tectrac, we combine mobile leak detection technology with cloud platforms, analytics, and GIS-led insights. Our systems help utilities detect, prioritise, and repair methane leaks faster, reducing emissions, increasing safety, and accelerating the transition to net zero across the UK and Europe.
The Role
We’re looking for a Java Software Engineer to join our backend team and help develop the cloud-based platforms behind our methane detection and emissions intelligence systems.
This is a hands-on role where you’ll:
- Write and improve production Java code for backend services processing survey, sensor, and geospatial data.
- Work closely with experienced engineers to implement RESTful APIs, data pipelines, and distributed systems.
- Gradually take on more responsibility as your skills develop.
- Gain exposure to production reliability, system performance, and incident investigations.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
