About the Role
Job Title: Job Planning & Medical Staffing Manager
Team: Medical Workforce
Opportunity: A pivotal role shaping how we support Consultant, SAS, and Resident Doctor workforce across the Trust.
As Job Planning & Medical Staffing Manager, you will be responsible for:
- Full delivery of the Trust’s medical job planning cycle
- Ensuring compliance with national terms and conditions
- Embedding robust governance
- Promoting a fair and consistent approach across all specialties
- Leading and developing the medical staffing team, including:
- Overseeing resident doctor rotations
- Supporting delivery of the 10-point plan
- Ensuring effective workforce utilisation through high-quality operational processes
- Collaborating with key stakeholders, including:
- Chief Medical Officers
- Medical education colleagues
- Finance teams
- Acting as a central access point for expert medical workforce support and advice to deliver Trust priorities

You will also:
- Constructively challenge operational performance to drive improvement
- Support the Assistant Director of Medical Workforce & Medical Education in implementing job plans, medical policies, and interprets national guidelines for best practice
- Maintain and review Medical Workforce policies (e.g., annual leave, job planning)
Key Responsibilities
- Take end-to-end ownership of the medical job planning and workforce staffing processes.
- Work closely with senior clinical leaders, operational managers, and corporate teams to ensure seamless services.
- Ensure workforce alignment with Trust priorities via informed, high-quality decision-making.
- Identify gaps in recruitment and retention strategies while advising on process improvements.
Requirements
Successful candidates should have:
- Experience in medical workforce planning and staffing, ideally within a NHS or high-volume medical environment.
- A robust understanding of job planning processes, governance structures, and national NHS terms and conditions.
- Proven ability in:
- Collaborative stakeholder management
- Analytical problem-solving
- Transparent, confident communication with clinical and operational leaders.
- Strong understanding of:
- Medical education portfolios
- Resident doctor training hubs
- Workforce utilising processes
