About the Role

Morgan Healey are seeking an energetic and commercially astute Journals Commissioning Editor to spearhead the growth of a Mission research-focused journals portfolio in the environmental and water sciences sector.

Reporting to the Head of Journals, this role will focus on:

  • Attracting high-quality manuscripts
  • Building and nurturing relationships with authors, editors, and scientific communities
  • Delivering an exceptional author and review experience
  • Ensuring critical research reaches researchers, professionals, and policymakers globally

This opportunity combines academic insight with commercial acumen, ensuring that groundbreaking environmental and water science research is published and shared effectively.


Key Responsibilities

Author and Editorial Relations

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to authors, offering strategic guidance through submission, peer review, and publication.
  • Strengthen long-term working relationships with editors, reviewers, and research communities while fostering credibility and support.

Content Growth

  • Actively drive journal performance by acquiring and retaining high-quality research submissions to align with portfolio expansion objectives.
  • Support the delivery of annual commissioning targets and contribute to journal impact goals.

Special Issues and Strand Development

  • Lead the end-to-end Special Issues programme, including:
    • Identifying Guest Editors
    • Evaluating proposals
    • Ensuring timely content contribution and delivery
    • Content alignment with our global msTF Strategy

Manuscript Management and Commonsensical Transfer

  • Optimise author transfer and cross-journal workflows, ensuring submissions flow to the most suitable outlet while maintaining a seamless experience.

Collaboration

  • Work with internal teams (marketing, permissions/digital production) to maximise content visibility and strategies for promotion.
  • Procure angle on relevant trends in water/environmental sciences and data science to enhance scientific communication.

Essential Skills and Experience

Experience

The ideal candidate combines:

  • A deep understanding of scholarly journals publishing—especially in academic journals within environmental science, hydrology, or related disciplines.
  • Solid experience in journal commissioning, content acquisition or sales, with a track record of building and managing high-performing relationships.
  • Demonstrated skills in content development execution, including outcomes from Special Issues or thematic collections.

Qualifications

Preferred: PhD in water sciences, environmental sciences, engineering, or a related field.

Traction

  • A curiosity for cutting-edge research trends within academic journals.
  • Proven ability to drive targets within a culture that values brand, experience, and relationship-building.
  • Familiarity with academic publishing metrics (e.g. Web of Science or Dimensions databases).
  • Experience making an impact in driving global awareness for academic content.

Personal Approach

  • Influencing skill with a proactive stance—especially when navigating dependencies and hurdles.
  • Commercial acumen: ability to identify growth opportunities and creative solutions for digital-first journal expansion.
  • Strong adaptability in aligning content with editorial priorities while remaining flexible to new trends and collaborations.
