Job Description
We are pleased to announce the upcoming SIPP Sergeant Promotion process.
This opportunity is open to Police Constables and Qualified Detective Constables
Applying for this process provides officers with the chance to progress in their careers and, by demonstrating strong and effective leadership, helps build trust and confidence within the communities we serve.
Recognising and promoting those with the right knowledge, skills and potential to be the policing leaders of the future is essential to help us adapt to changing demands.
Aspiring Sergeants who meet all eligibility criteria of SIPP Stage 1 can now apply for selection at Stage 2 of the process.

If the FWP is to support adjustments in line with your wellbeing passport supported by recent Occupational Health Unit (OHU) guidance, it is important that this is understood by any future line manager.
Vacancy numbers will be determined based on operational requirements at the time of posting.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

If results dates change due to unforeseen circumstances, candidates will be made aware.
Please Note
If you have previously applied for promotion and successfully met the national pass mark in your LPP Part A (Selection) Portfolio but were not successful at the in-force selection process, you will still need to register your intention to apply for promotion on Oleeo and state in eligibility question 1 that you have passed SIPP Stage 1 Selection, answering the question as 'yes'. If you have completed your FLL or are booked onto a course before the 5th October, you will automatically be invited to the in-force promotion board.
If you have previously applied for promotion but were unsuccessful at Stage 2 Selection, then you may choose to submit only evidence against the questions that you wish to be re-assessed. If you choose to update your examples, they will be marked as new responses. If you do not submit evidence in your LPP Part A (Selection) Portfolio your previous score for that question will be carried across to this process.
General Information
In all cases the Chief Constable reserves the right to appoint an individual to any police officer post considering welfare issues, succession planning, redeployment and development needs. In applying for promotion you understand that you may be posted to any Directorate and location in the force area within a reasonable commute.
Successful candidates working flexible or part-time hours may have to re-negotiate their flexible working agreement with their new manager in accordance with Police Regulations and Force Policy.
It is expected that officers once posted will remain in their new posts for at least 12 months (2 years for Neighbourhood and Custody roles) from the date of appointment and, in some exceptional cases where there is a greater payback/operational need, this period may be longer.
Every effort should also be made to reduce TOIL accrued of more than 50 hours before commencing a new role.
Some roles may require a higher vetting level than stated in the advert.
Avon and Somerset Police are committed to equality and diversity and particularly welcome applications from people from minority and underrepresented groups. All applications will be treated on merit. If you are from an underrepresented group and would like support with the process, please email @avonandsomerset.police.uk
Please indicate on your Oleeo registration form if you require any reasonable adjustments at any stage of the promotion process. Contact before the closing date if you require any assistance.
