Job Purpose
The Junior Broadcast Engineer supports the operation, maintenance and reliability of GB News' broadcast and production systems, helping to ensure the successful delivery of live and recorded content across television, radio, and digital platforms.
Working as part of the Engineering team, the Junior Broadcast Engineer provides first-line technical support, assists with system monitoring and maintenance activities and supports the resolution of technical issues under the guidance of senior engineers. The role offers an excellent opportunity to develop technical expertise across a wide range of broadcast technologies within a fast-paced 24/7 news environment.
The Junior Broadcast Engineer will work closely with operational teams, stakeholders and suppliers while developing knowledge of broadcast workflows, IP infrastructure, production systems and emerging media technologies.
Key Accountabilities
- Assist in maintaining the continuous operation of broadcast and production systems to support uninterrupted on-air services.
- Provide first-line technical support to operational teams, escalating issues where required.
- Monitor broadcast systems and assist with fault diagnosis and troubleshooting.
- Support routine inspections, preventative maintenance activities and system health checks.
- Assist with technical preparations for live productions, outside broadcasts and special events.
- Work alongside senior engineers to resolve technical incidents and operational issues.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents, support requests, equipment inventories and technical documentation.
- Support testing, implementation, and commissioning activities for system upgrades and engineering projects.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of technical documentation and operational procedures.
- Develop technical knowledge and skills through training, mentoring and hands-on experience.
- Participate in shift-based support arrangements within a 24/7 operational environment.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Strong interest in broadcast engineering, media technology, IT or related technical disciplines.
- Basic understanding of broadcast, production, media or IT technologies.
- Understanding of fundamental networking concepts.
- Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Willingness to work within a shift-based 24/7 operational environment.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Desirable Criteria
- Previous experience in a broadcast, media, production, AV or IT support environment.
- Familiarity with television production workflows.
- Knowledge of IP networking and computer systems.
- Understanding of audio, video, streaming and transmission technologies.
- Experience with technical support, helpdesk or customer service environments.
- Relevant degree, apprenticeship, qualification or certification in Broadcast Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of cloud and media technologies.
