ROLE SUMMARY
We are seeking a highly organised and detail-oriented Junior Clinical Assistant to support the Clinical Manager in planning and delivering in-house clinical studies at our Babraham Research Campus site. The role combines participant-facing clinical coordination, study administration, electronic data entry, biological sample handling and close collaboration with our laboratory team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career life-science graduate or clinical research professional who wants practical experience across the full study lifecycle. Initial projects will include repeated participant visits, skin imaging and biophysical measurements, questionnaires, electronic case report forms, biological sample collection and study close-out activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Study set-up and administration
- Support the Clinical Manager with study start-up, including document preparation, version control, study trackers, site files, training records, visit materials and participant packs.
- Prepare and maintain study documentation such as participant information sheets, informed consent forms, case report forms, screening and enrolment logs, delegation logs, equipment logs and sample records.
- File documents promptly in the Trial Master File and Investigator Site File, ensuring records are complete, current and audit-ready.
- Assist with study-product and consumable receipt, inventory, labelling, storage, accountability and reconciliation.
Participant recruitment and visits
- Support participant recruitment, pre-screening, appointment scheduling, reminders, screening, enrolment and retention activities.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with participants, answering routine study questions and escalating medical, eligibility or safety queries to the appropriate delegated team member.
- Prepare clinical rooms and study equipment before visits and help deliver smooth, participant-centred on-site appointments.
- Support approved study procedures within training and delegation, which may include questionnaires, facial imaging, skin barrier, hydration and elasticity measurements, non-invasive skin sampling and finger-prick sample collection.
- Review visit documentation for completeness before the participant leaves wherever possible.

Data entry and quality control
- Enter and update study data accurately in Datacapt or other approved eCRF/EDC systems, following source-document and data-entry conventions.
- Maintain recruitment, visit, diary, compliance, deviation, adverse-event and sample-tracking logs.
- Assist with data queries, source-data checks, document quality control and reconciliation between clinical, laboratory and electronic records.
- Escalate missing data, inconsistencies, protocol deviations, participant concerns and adverse events promptly to the Clinical Manager.
Sample handling and laboratory coordination
- Collect, label, process, store and transfer biological samples in accordance with the protocol and SOPs, following chain-of-custody and temperature-control requirements.
- Coordinate sample handover with the laboratory team and ensure clinical visit records match laboratory receipt and storage records.
- Monitor kit and consumable stock levels, prepare sampling materials and help maintain clean, orderly and compliant clinical work areas.
- Support sample disposition, archive preparation and study close-out activities.
Compliance and teamwork
- Work in accordance with the approved protocol, Good Clinical Practice principles, participant consent, Sequential SOPs, UK GDPR and confidentiality requirements.
- Complete required study and equipment training and maintain accurate personal training records.
- Collaborate closely with the Clinical Manager, laboratory scientists, data scientists, statisticians, external clinicians and study vendors.
- Contribute to study status updates, internal meetings, clinical summaries and lessons-learned reviews.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- Bachelor's degree in life sciences, biology, biochemistry, biomedical science, clinical research or a related field.
- Strong organisation and attention to detail, with the ability to manage several tasks and deadlines without losing accuracy.
- Clear, considerate communication and confidence working with study participants and cross-functional colleagues.
- Comfort using digital systems, spreadsheets and structured records; willingness to learn clinical software such as Datacapt.
- Ability to follow SOPs precisely, maintain confidentiality and escalate issues appropriately.
- Willingness to work full-time on site at Babraham Research Campus and to support participant visits according to the study schedule.
Desirable
- Up to two years' experience in clinical research, a CRO, an NHS or university research team, a laboratory, participant recruitment or a regulated life-science environment; relevant placements or internships are welcome.
- Familiarity with ICH-GCP, research ethics, informed consent, eCRFs, source documents or trial master files.
- Experience handling biological samples, maintaining chain-of-custody records or working to laboratory SOPs.
- Experience in dermatology, skin or scalp research, cosmetics, microbiome research or consumer-health studies.
- Experience with skin imaging, TEWL, hydration or elasticity instruments, or willingness to undertake full training.
