Junior Engineer
Junior Engineer – Eleclink Interconnector
About the Role
The Junior Engineer will provide essential engineering support to both the Cable Maintenance and Converter Station Maintenance teams, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Eleclink HVDC interconnector.
This is a development opportunity for early-career engineers, offering exposure to:
- High-voltage transmission systems
- Asset management
- Maintenance engineering
- Project delivery
The role involves operational and maintenance support across HVDC cable systems, converter stations, and associated infrastructure. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced engineers, contractors, and operational teams in both the UK and France.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Operational Support
- Support Cable and Converter Maintenance teams in executing planned and corrective maintenance activities.
- Assist in coordinating and monitoring maintenance contractors, ensuring compliance with approved procedures and safety protocols.
- Participate in site visits, inspections, and audits of cable and converter station assets.
- Contribute to maintenance planning activities and track completion of tasks.
- Review contractor reports, maintenance records, and performance data for accuracy and compliance.
Asset Management & Reliability
- Maintain asset registers, maintenance records, and technical documentation.
- Monitor asset performance to identify reliability improvement opportunities.
- Assist in investigating equipment faults, operational incidents, and maintenance issues.
- Support the spare parts inventory and asset lifecycle planning.
- Contribute to root cause analysis and implementation of corrective measures.
Technical Support & Engineering Projects
- Provide engineering support on cable and converter station projects, upgrades, and improvements.
- Assist in reviewing technical documentation, specifications, drawings, and engineering reports.
- Support testing, inspections, and commissioning activities.
- Work with senior engineers to develop understanding of HVDC systems, protection systems, and monitoring equipment.
- Contribute to technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

Documentation, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain and update operational procedures, risk assessments, and method statements.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Support document control activities, ensuring records are accurately maintained.
- Assist in audits, certification, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Promote a strong safety culture, improving health, safety, and environmental performance.
Learning & Development
- Build expertise in HVDC cable systems, converter stations, and electricity transmission infrastructure.
- Develop collaborative relationships with internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders across UK and France.
- Participate in training, mentoring, and development programs to enhance technical and operational knowledge.
- Gain exposure to commercial, regulatory, and operational aspects of interconnector ownership and operation.
Ideal Candidate
Experience
- Qualified engineer (degree level) or recent graduate with industrial experience, placement, apprenticeship, or graduate scheme background.
- Basic knowledge of electrical power systems, mechanical systems, or industrial infrastructure.
- Interest in high-voltage transmission, energy infrastructure, and the electricity sector.
- Advantageous: Previous exposure to maintenance, engineering projects, or asset management.
- Beneficial: Understanding of interconnector roles in energy networks and experience working with contractors or external stakeholders.

Education
- Degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant discipline.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Attention to detail with a commitment to high-quality work.
- Organised and methodical, able to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Analytical mindset with a willingness to learn and solve technical problems.
- Proactive, adaptable, capable of working independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, fostering positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Professionalism and positive ambassadorship for Eleclink.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of French is advantageous, not required.
Location, Travel, Security & Employment Requirements
- Location: Folkestone (office-based with minimum 3 days/week attendance).
- Regular travel required between Folkestone, London, and Calais for maintenance and project support.

- Due to Channel Tunnel security protocols, additional screening may apply.
- Must hold legal right to work in the UK.
- Non-British/Irish nationals must check visa eligibility (updates apply from 1 January 2021).
