Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to gain tertiary-level training in the diagnosis and management of specialised glaucoma conditions and cataract surgery.

  • Job Title: Junior Fellow in Glaucoma
  • Contract Type: Fixed Term
  • Duration: 12 months
  • Primary Purpose: Training Contract (structured training, supervised clinical development)
  • Start Date: ASAP

This post focus on supervised clinical practice and educational opportunities aligned to specialty training curricula, while also contributing to service delivery.


About the Role

Working within a high-volume eye care unit, the Fellow will engage with:

  • +120,000 outpatient visits annually
  • +6,000 inpatient cases
  • +24,000 eye casualty attendances

The Glaucoma Unit features:

  • State-of-the-art outpatient facilities
  • Modern operating theatres with cutting-edge technology
  • A collaborative team of 4 Consultants, 3 Specialist Doctors, 2 Specialty Doctors, Fellows, and Specialist Nurses, offering both traditional and Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS).

Main Responsibilities

As a Junior Fellow, you will:

  • Provide clinical advice to ophthalmology colleagues regarding complex glaucoma cases
  • Participate in glaucoma emergency management
  • Contribute to teaching sessions for undergraduates, postgraduates, and non-medical staff
  • Rotate on the on-call shifts
  • Respond to ward and casualty referrals from both the Eye Unit and General Hospital

Salary & People Conditions

  • Basic Salary: £54,499
  • Remuneration structured on the NHS Band 9a basic salary, paid in line with the National Medical & Dental Pay Circular
  • Payment will include additional hours, weekendallowance, or enhanced hourly rates as per the doctors’ schedule

Additional Notes

  • Interviewees must cover their own travel costs for interviews
  • Travelling expenses for commuting are not reimbursed
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise and right to work legal status are mandatory

Appointment Framework

  • Appointments follow Trust terms, mirroring the clinical grade corresponding to training (Stop Start) fellowship.
  • Each Fellow will have a named educational supervisor for structured mentorship.
  • Continued Professional Development (CPD) is encouraged, with available study leave and annual appraisals to support revalidation (as per GMC requirements).

Application Requirements

Essential Criteria

Qualifications & Experience

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a current licence to practise
  • Demonstrable clinical judgement in:
    • General ophthalmology
    • Anterior segment specialties
    • Auditing of clinical results
  • Capacity for independent learning

Skills & Attributes

  • Evidence of effective multi-specialty teamwork
  • Strong verbal & written communication in English
  • Skills in teaching and mentoring

Desirable (Bonus) Criteria

  • Further qualifications or advanced upper-level training
  • Research, publications, or a higher degree
  • Unsupervised cataract surgery experience
  • Experience with glaucoma surgery or complications management
  • Prior scientific presentations or medical teaching
