Job Description
About the Role
As a Junior Software Developer, you'll play an important role in designing, developing and supporting our core banking platform to meet the evolving needs of Newcastle Building Society Group. Working in a collaborative and agile environment, you'll be involved throughout the full development lifecycle, from understanding business requirements and shaping technical solutions to coding, testing, implementation and ongoing support.
You'll work closely with colleagues across the business to analyse requirements, assess the impact of proposed changes and contribute to the design and specification of enhancements to our core banking platform. Combining strong technical expertise with a customer-focused mindset, you'll ensure solutions are delivered to a high standard, in line with agreed timescales, governance requirements and development best practices.
The role offers the opportunity to partner with project teams, squads and end users to gain a detailed understanding of business needs, helping to translate these into effective and scalable technical solutions. You'll also play a key part in identifying potential risks, resource requirements and any associated costs, ensuring proposed changes are fully assessed before implementation.
About You
We're looking for a motivated and inquisitive software professional who is passionate about technology and enjoys solving complex problems. You will bring a strong technical foundation, ideally supported by a degree in a relevant subject or equivalent experience, along with an eagerness to learn and develop within a collaborative environment.
You'll have experience working within a development team and be comfortable contributing to projects in Agile or Scrum-based environments. With strong analytical and problem-solving skills, you'll be able to assess requirements, identify effective solutions and understand the wider impact of technical change on systems, users and business processes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

A good understanding of software development principles, programming languages, frameworks and design patterns is essential. Experience of database and application technologies would be advantageous, while knowledge of the IBMi operating system would be beneficial.
