Junior Sister/ Charge Nurse

Junior Sister / Charge Nurse – Eye Outpatients Department

Part-time (30 hrs), Internal Applicants Only University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust


About the Role

A fantastic and eagerly anticipated opportunity has arisen in our busy, fast-paced Eye Outpatients Department, appealing primarily to internal University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust applicants.

We welcome an enthusiastic, professionally minded Junior Sister / Charge Nurse eager to develop leadership skills, mentor peers, and contribute to the growth of an expanding team. This role operates on a flexible schedule (Monday–Saturday), with time allocated to mentor junior nurses, speak with patients about further self-referral, and support ANTT and IV subjects.

Unmissable opportunity for career progression in a dynamic department serving up to 300 patients per session, split across two locations (Southampton and Lymington Hospitals).

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead as a positive role model for staff, setting high standards in professionalism, safety, and care quality.
  • Develop professional knowledge while mentoring colleagues, supporting their personal, career, and clinical growth.
  • Ensure health, safety, and security standards are maintained for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Drive service improvement initiatives across the department, fostering both clinical and operational excellence.
  • Champion equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), addressing any unconscious bias in behaviour or decision-making.
  • Plan and facilitate staff training sessions, mentor learners, and create supportive learning environments.
  • Clinical excellence: Develop expertise in ophthalmology and paediatrics (training provided).
  • Act as a communication hub between multidisciplinary teams, patients, and senior nursing staff.
  • Support senior management tasks in rostering, Human Resources (mentoring probationary clinical nurse specialists), IPR (Intellectual Property Review), and promoting healthcare transformation.
  • Promote health and well-being within the team while contributing to data collection, trend analysis, and patient feedback processes.

Day-to-Day Activities

  • Supervising and coordinating a team of over 50 members across two hospital sites.
  • Supporting advanced practitioner procedures (ANTT, IV therapy).
  • Participating in educational group sessions and specialty clinics.
  • Assisting in preventing/adjusting clinical escalations, recording feedback, and supporting patient follow-ups.
  • Sharing evidence-based knowledge.

Main Duties

  • Clinical leadership – Demonstrate clinical expertise as a role model; empower others to maintain standards.
  • Mentor/coaching – Support learning in practice, including supervising learners, organising training, and assessing competence.
  • Safety & compliance – Ensure adherence to health/safety protocols; promote infection control and patient reporting.
  • Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion – Challenges discriminatory practices with openness and professionalism, embedding inclusion in all activities.
  • Health & well-being advocacy – Help patients achieve optimal care and support carbon footprint reductions.
  • Data management – Accurate recording and follow-through on patient assessments, insurance reimbursement, and audit compliance.
  • Technical & IT skills – Utilise nursing science systems effectively; open to embracing new technology trends.
  • ITU/ACLES ANTT/IV competence progression – Enhance advanced practice skills including rapid access injection therapy management.


Person Specification

Experience & Qualifications (Essential)

✅ Registered Nurse (Degree or Diploma) on the relevant register. ✅ Post-registration experience (e.g., ANP or DNL modules undertaken). ✅ Current acute care/admission experience enable safe discharge decision making post-operative solutions. ✅ Advanced Nursing ksa satisfactory after situational judgement evidence in recruitment assessment. ✅ Ward management or leadership experience (aches of development plan fulfilment). ✅ Training facilitation in own clinical area; ability to challenge leading with integrity and compassion. ✅ Continuing professional development (CPD) commitment, keeping skills up-to-date in Ophthalmology subspecialties. ✅ Nurses Management Curriculum (NM 305): Specific strengths in Senior Matron & Charge Nurse role play demonstrations.

🔹 Experience in compaint’ resolver/gathering patient feedback leading to procedural improvements. 🔹 Complaint handling in clinical incidents & ethics healthcare metrics documentation. 🔹 Competence in budgeting, Suffolk Institute (if relevant) collaborations, supporting multifaceted CCG work environments. 🔹 Ability to evaluate challenges as appropriate to senior team members under mega-confident manning communication.
