Junior Sister / Charge Nurse (Part-Time, 30 hrs) – Eye Outpatients Department

About the Role
Our busy and fast-paced Eye Outpatients Department presents an exciting opportunity to advance your career as a Junior Sister / Charge Nurse in a developing, dynamic team. This part-time (30 hours) role offers professional growth, flexibility, and a supportive environment where leadership, mentorship, and modern working practices are valued.
Ideal candidates must be highly motivated, professional, flexible, and committed to fostering a positive team culture. Ideal skills include forward-thinking problem-solving, teaching, and coaching peers, which are vital as the department evolves.
The team – spanning over 50 staff across Southampton and Lymington Hospitals – runs clinics from Monday to Saturday while seeing up to 300 patients per session. We strongly encourage an informal visit before applying.
Key Responsibilities
As a Junior Sister / Charge Nurse, your role will include:
Clinical & Leadership Responsibilities
- Develop clinical knowledge and expertise, acting as a role model within the ophthalmic specialty.
- Avoiding prerequisites, on-the-job training will be provided, making this an excellent career progression opportunity for qualified nurses with ward or preceptorship experience.
- Ensure high-quality patient care, supporting the team to deliver excellence in every interaction.
- Facilitate a positive learning environment, including:
- Managing rosters
- HR-related tasks (probations, IPRs, discipline/grievances)
- Reinforcing clinical standards and adherence to nationally mandated best practices.
- Mentoring and supporting less experienced staff

- Maintain health, safety, and security standards on your stretches.
- Uphold data accuracy and safe information management practices.
- Contribute to service improvements, including identifying and addressing gaps.
- Promote diversity, inclusivity, and patient-centred care, ensuring equality is integrated seamlessly into all team conduct.
- Schedule and manage your own learning development while aligning your growth to broader organisational goals.
Soft Skills & Team Leadership
- Teach, empower, and coach colleagues to navigate complex cases with confidence.
- Work with sensitivity across diverse patient backgrounds, ensuring culturally appropriate care.

Core Competencies & Qualifications
Essential Criteria
- Registered as a Nurse (Degree or Diploma) on the relevant part of the Nursing & Midwifery Council register.
- Strong post-registration experience (quality assurance, education, or management preferred).
- Experience in acute or clinical settings with an ability to improve service quality.
- Demonstrated capability to supervise and train learners effectively.
- In-depth generic medical/acute nursing knowledge with a commitment to speciality development.
- Proven track record of clinical decision-making and remaining actively engaged in Continuing Professional Development.

Desirable Experience
- Handling complaints or adverse incidents gracefully.
- Advanced budget awareness or involvement in cost-saving initiatives.
- Supporting Education Framework-related activities (Practice Assessors, challenges, ed trials).
