Junior Software Engineer
We are seeking a self-motivated Software Engineer to join our agile software development team working on the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), the largest radio telescope in the world. An interest in science, technology and astronomy or radio-astronomy is important for this role.
The ideal candidate will have a good Python background and be responsible for developing, maintaining, and enhancing monitoring and control systems used in our cutting-edge technology platforms. This role requires a combination of software development expertise and practical experience with various software tools and frameworks.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with senior software engineers and scientists to design, develop and maintain software for the integration of instrumentation, monitoring and control systems for the SKA.
- Write, test, and document software code to support ongoing projects and software products, primarily using Python with occasional exposure to C/C++.
- Participate in code reviews, debugging activities, and collaborative software development practices.
- Contribute to testing, CI/CD workflows, and containerized deployment environments.
- Collaborate with distributed Agile teams using modern development and communication tools.
- Learn and apply software engineering best practices including version control, testing, and continuous integration.
- Support ongoing operational, integration, and software quality activities across the project.

Minimum Requirements:
- Experience developing software that interacts with electronics or instrumentation, ideally in python or C/C++ programming languages.
- Familiarity with the Linux Operating System.
- Understanding of software engineering fundamentals including version control, testing, and CI/CD concepts.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a distributed Agile team.
- Willingness to learn and take ownership where appropriate.

Desired Requirements:
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, or containerized deployment environments.
- Exposure to GitLab-based development workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
- Familiarity with Tango Controls, EPICS, or similar monitoring/control systems.
- Experience interfacing software with instrumentation, hardware, or distributed systems.
- Interest in astronomy or radio-astronomy.
- Awareness of modern AI-assisted software development tooling.
