Junior Specialist Doctor (JSD) – Higher Acute Medicine

Junior Specialist Doctors – Higher in Acute Medicine

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and hardworking doctor to join our Acute Medicine Department as a Junior Specialist Doctor (Higher) at the MMUH, Sandwell Hospital, West Bromwich and City Hospital, Birmingham, with effect from as soon as possible.

This is a 12-month fixed-term post, with the possibility of longer-term opportunities within the Trust subject to performance and progression.

Job Level & Criteria

  • Postgraduate training level: Middle grade (equivalent to 3–4 years post-Foundation/qualification)
  • Requirements:
    • Extensive experience post-qualification
    • Full MRCP membership
    • Full GMC Registration and licence to practise
    • Up-to-date ALS (Advanced Life Support) certification
    • Recent Acute Hospital experience (ST3 level or equivalent)
    • Recent experience of at least 6 months at an equivalent level within the last 12 months
    • Essential:
      • Previous experience in General Medicine
      • Knowledge of NHS workings highly desirable

Role Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Participate in ward rounds on the Acute Medical Units (AMUs)
  • Lead on Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) in collaboration with Emergency Department (ED) to improve patient flow/journey
  • Conduct Acute Medicine virtual clinics
  • Opportunity to develop specialty sessions related to Acute Medicine
  • Focused teaching on Acute Medicine Ultrasound Skills (AMUS), including:
    • Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FICE)
    • Cardiac Ultrasound in Sepsis (CUSIC)
    • Focused Assessment with Sonography for Cadaveric/Hemodynamic evaluation (FAMUS)

Administrative & Collaborative Duties

  • Ensure timely correspondence with General Practitioners (with support from site secretarial team)
  • Where applicable, participate in medical student and MRCP teaching

Professional Development & Wellbeing

  • Engagement in research/audit where appropriate
  • Attendance at weekly Medical meetings at City Hospital
  • Duty to provide mutual cover for colleagues during annual and study leave
  • Participation in the Acute Medicine Middle Grade rota
  • Placement within GIM Middle Grade rotational system (supporting career development and skill rotational opportunities)
