Kafka Engineer – Code Changes & Non-Functional Testing

Location: London, UK (Hybrid 2-3 days/week)
Contract: 4 Months
Start Date: Immediately

Role Overview

Seeking a Kafka Engineer responsible for implementing code enhancements, optimizing event-driven systems, and performing non-functional testing to ensure performance, scalability, and reliability of Kafka-based platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance Kafka components including producers, consumers, topics, and streams.
  • Optimize event-driven pipelines, message flows, and distributed system performance.
  • Ensure backward compatibility and minimal impact during code changes.
  • Design and execute non-functional testing (performance, load, stress, endurance).
  • Validate scalability, throughput, latency, durability, and fault tolerance.
  • Monitor Kafka clusters, brokers, partitions, offsets, and consumer lag.
  • Identify bottlenecks and provide performance tuning recommendations.
  • Collaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams for deployments and optimization.
  • Document technical changes, test outcomes, and improvement areas.

  • Strong hands-on experience with Apache Kafka (Producers, Consumers, Topics, Partitions, Streams).
  • Proficiency in Java, Python, or Scala for Kafka development.
  • Experience with distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and streaming platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with performance testing tools such as JMeter or Gatling.
  • Knowledge of Kafka tuning parameters (batch size, linger.ms, compression, etc.).
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Splunk.
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and deployment practices.
