Kitchen Staff Substitute
Kitchen Staff (On-call) – Position Summary
Able to perform the essential functions of kitchen staff positions on an as-needed basis.
Opaa! Food Management, Inc. operates in 8 states in the Midwest. Our pay rates vary depending on the state and position. Please apply, and a Hiring Manager will discuss pay with you in more detail.
Functions of the Job
Production
- Assist with daily set-up of serving lines, ensuring all food is held at the required temperature
- Stock milk coolers and prepare them for service
- Help prepare foods according to the menu plan and Opaa! recipes
- Plan and prep ahead for next day menus
- Operate slicers, mixers, grinders, and other equipment (with proper certification)
- Maintain neat, clean, and organised work areas
- Clean kitchen and cafeteria areas, including equipment and dishes
- Organise inventory stock and follow First In/First Out (FIFO) procedures
- Keep cooler/storage racks clean and free from debris
- Clean, monitor, and maintain chemical usage in the dishwashing area, including removing clean dishes from machines and storing them in serving areas
- Requisition food and supplies through the Kitchen Manager
- Prepare bread, cakes, cookies, and baked goods as required by the menu plan
- Ensure appealing food presentation for customers
- Conduct batch cooking to maintain high-quality food and excellent presentation
- Set up serving/bar lines, ensuring proper food temperatures
- Restock serving lines as needed and ensure condiments, napkins, silverware, and dishes are available
- Serve items with correct size and utensils, maintaining quality presentation and hospitality

Compliance
- Prepare meals strictly in compliance with the menu plan and Opaa! recipes
- Convert and follow standardised recipes for consistent quality
- Identify reimbursable meals and follow HHFKA and CACFP regulations
- Maintain accurate daily production records per school grade group
- Follow HACCP processes, conducting daily, weekly, and monthly food safety checks
- Record temperatures of hot and cold food
- Adhere to Opaa’s Safety Procedure Manual and report unsafe working conditions to supervision
- Participate in the safety incentive program
- Attend all required meetings and in-services
- Complete mandatory yearly training hours as per HHFKA guidelines

- Ensure strict compliance with the Opaa! Food Management, Inc. Timekeeping Policy
Administrative
- Handle customer monies at service time (making change, operating cash registers, or POS systems)
- Process only reimbursable meals through the POS system
- Complete daily paperwork, meal counts, and reimbursement tasks
- Submit hours worked via ADP or edit sheets
- Provide 24-hour notification for missed shifts in advance (or notify DNS immediately in emergencies)
- Perform other duties as assigned

Physical/Visual Activities or Demands
Key requirements for job performance:
- Frequent need to stand, walk, sit, squat, climb, balance, kneel, crawl
- Occasionally exert over 60 pounds of force (frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds)
- Essential vision abilities: depth perception, sharp focus, colour vision
Education & Position Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED (preferred)
- Up to one month of related experience or equivalent training
Skills:
- Proficiency in reading and writing simple instructions/correspondence
- Ability to present information clearly in one-on-one and small group settings
- Mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, unit conversions, rates, ratios, percentages, bar graph interpretation)
- Logical reasoning for following structured instructions
Machines, Tools & Equipment:
- Dishwasher, steamer/kettle, mixer, oven, stove, fryers, slicer, thermometers, gauges
- Knives, box cutters, meal counting software, desktop PCs, calculators
- Telephone, fax, scanner, copier, printers
