Consultant Older Adult Psychiatrist – Full Time
The Older Adult Psychiatrist position covers a population of approximately 11,600 individuals over 65 years old in the West of Moray, with the east of Moray care provided by a second Older Adult Psychiatrist. The role will be based at Dr Gray’s Hospital, Elgin, a modern District General Hospital with a range of specialties and diagnostic facilities.
About the Role
This post provides mental health care in Dr Gray’s Hospital (Elgin) and Seafield Hospital (Buckie). There is a long-standing tradition of collaboration between General Practices, local authorities, and NHS Integrated Joint Boards (since 2016) to optimise patient care.

Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Work: Provide Older Adult Psychiatry services to West Moray’s over-65 population, including inpatient care.
- Teaching: Contribute actively to undergraduate (medical students) and postgraduate (Specialty Trainees/Other Healthcare Workers) teaching.
- Continued Professional Development (CPD): Register with the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ CPD Programme—costs covered by NHS Grampian.
- Research & Quality Improvement: Seize opportunities for research collaboration with University of Aberdeen’s Departments of Mental Health and Psychology. Participate in service reforms, audits, and clinical governance initiatives.
- Joint Appraisal & Revalidation: Engage in annual appraisal to support revalidation.
- Flexible Working Consideration: If selected, derogations for full-time working requirements can be agreed if needed.

- An individualised job plan will be agreed early in the appointment to align with service needs and the Consultant’s skills, experience, and interests.
- Partial-time or rotational arrangements may be explored where clinically justified.

Requirements
Qualifications & Registration
- Full GMC (General Medical Council) registration with a licence to practise (active before post commencement).
- UK-Trained Doctors: Evidence of successfully completed higher specialty training qualifying for Completion of Training (CCT) or confirmed CCT entry by:
- When interviewing, or
- Within six months of entry into the GMC Specialist Register
- International Doctors:
- Approved International Training routes (UK-based junior training) or
- GIMS CIRE (Global Initiative for Medical Specialists Certification In Recognition Equivalent) confirmation by interview date.
- Specialist Registration:
- CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) or Portfolio Pathway route doctors can only consider substantive roles upon registration. (Exceptions if waiting for conversion: see below)
- Applications from doctors with appropriate training/experience without a GMC Specialist Register entry can be considered for locum consultant contracts (max 12 months), pending:
- Confirmation of the need for substantive appointment, or
- Implications for potential emergency cover.
