Consultant Psychiatrist - East Moray Catchment Area
Post Overview This community-based position has arisen due to a retirement and service development, offering an effective work–life balance. All Consultant Psychiatrist posts within this organisation include protected Specialist Professional Activity (SPA) time within the job plan. Location
Dr Gray’s Hospital, Elgin
- A modern District General Hospital with a range of specialties and diagnostic facilities.
- Based in the Royal Burgh of Elgin, a hub for administration, education, tourism, and trade. Surrounded by Scotland’s historic castles, whisky distilleries, and a wealth of recreational activities including:
- Golf, fishing, hill walking, surfing, canoeing, cycling, horse riding
- Winter sports
- Known for its exceptional quality of life, strong transport links to the rest of the UK, and a thriving community.
Role in the Community
The integrated role involves close collaboration with General Practice and the local authority, formalised since 2016 under an Integrated Joint Board. This consultant position provides specialist input to the east Moray catchment area, specifically supporting the Maryhill GP practice.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- Work within east Moray’s catchment, supporting the broader Moray Mental Health Services.
- Maintain an annual appraisal linked to revalidation and demonstrate adherence to clinical governance standards.
- Participate in audit activities and ongoing improvement initiatives.

- Register with the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Programme (all associated costs covered by NHS Grampian).

Applicant Information
Licence to Practice
- Full registration with a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC) is essential (registered prior to starting).

Training & Qualifications
For UK Trained Candidates
- Evidence of higher specialist training leading to Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) is required.
- No longer than 6 months since entry confirmation on the GMC Specialist Register at the expected start date.

For Internationally Trained Applicants
CESR or Portfolio Pathway
- To apply for this substantive Consultant post, CESR or Portfolio Pathway Specialist Registration must be finalised.
- Domestic eligibility for this role aligns with GMC-approved qualifications.
International Candidates
Doctors from countries with internationally-recognised specialist qualifications (approved by the GMC) may apply to join as a Locum Consultant for up to 12 months if no substantive appointment is confirmed. Local acting experience may be required during employment.
- GMC Specialist Registration (CESR or Portfolio Pathway) is encouraged during appointment.
- Ensure CESR submission application is in progress during locum periods.
