Knowles Research Group Laboratory Manager (Fixed Term)

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Professor Tuomas Knowles is looking for a Research Laboratory Manager. This role is an integral member of Professor Knowles' group based in the Department of Chemistry assisting with the day-by-day smooth running of the Knowles laboratories.

The role holder will provide management of the Knowles research laboratories to facilitate the smooth and effective support for research and teaching. They will provide specialist technical support to research staff and students to support the delivery of research projects on time and to budget. They will ensure a productive and safe research environment for the 40+ member research team that is supported by multiple grants and donations (£5M+). The Research Laboratory Manager will assist in the supervision of junior members of the team.

The Research Laboratory Manager will be expected to help students and post-docs implement new experiments and assist the group in practical aspects. They will be responsible for overseeing a range of complex, state-of-the-art equipment, and they will train group members in the equipment's use. They will introduce new members to the team, update the Lab Management & Safety Plan and ensure that the laboratory maintains a clean and safe environment. The Research Laboratory Manager also helps the research group to coordinate interactions with support staff within the Department.

Key Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Breadth of experience in research coordination/group administration in industry or academia.
  • Well-developed communication skills and the ability to relate well to a wide range of people.
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory work.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and take effective action.
