Role Overview
- Job Title: Kubernetes Platform Engineering Lead
- Location: London, hybrid
- Compensation: £130,000 + Bonus, Pension and Top Tier Benefits
- Reports As: Senior Manager / Associate Director
A senior platform leadership mandate focused on Kubernetes architecture, multi-tenancy, developer enablement, platform guardrails, observability, and consolidation of distributed platform patterns in a complex enterprise environment.
About the Role
Own and evolve a large-scale internal platform capability used by engineering teams across the business. Key focus on ensuring safe and efficient Kubernetes consumption while balancing autonomy with enterprise-grade reliability, security, auditability, and operational control.
Not applicable to:
- Generic DevOps roles
- Senior managerial positions with minimal Kubernetes exposure
- Cloud transformation roles without Kubernetes platform maturity
Key Responsibilities
- Architecture and evolution of a shared Kubernetes platform across multiple engineering teams.
- Design multi-tenancy patterns at scale:
- AWS accounts
- Clusters vs namespaces vs virtual clusters
- Control-plane and data-plane isolation
- Workload segmentation
- Define and enforce platform guardrails covering:
- RBAC (Role-Based Access Control)
- Admission controls
- Policy-as-code
- Network policies (e.g., Cilium)
- Security, auditability, and lifecycle management
- Consolidate distributed Kubernetes usage into:
- A more standardised and developer-friendly model
- A more supportable operational framework
- Build self-service capabilities, golden paths, and reusable practices to reduce developer friction.
- Partner closely with:
- Developer Engineering
- Security
- Architecture
- Cloud Engineering
- Application teams
- Own the platform roadmap including:
- Standards
- Adoption strategy
- Continuous improvement efforts
- Enhance observability, tracing, reliability and proactive operational insights.
- Lead and mentor a team of platform engineers, balancing:
- Planned platform evolution
- Urgent production/developer requests
- Treat developers as customers, removing friction, improving usability, and making secure paths the easiest path.

Essential Qualifications
- Deep Kubernetes platform expertise, particularly in AWS EKS at scale.
- Strong understanding of Kubernetes multi-tenancy:
- Isolation at cluster/namespace/virtual cluster levels
- Control-plane vs. data-plane segmentation
- Practical experience with guardrails including:
- RBAC & admission controls (e.g., Kyverno/OPA)
- Network policies (Cilium/Nebula)
- Quotas
- Secrets management
- Audit & compliance tools
- Experience designing or operating developer platforms like:
- Internal developer platforms
- Self-service workflows
- Platform-as-a-product solutions
- Cloud engineering depth in AWS infrastructure, including:
- Multi-account strategies
- Networking
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
- CI/CD & GitOps
- Collaborative ethos ensuring enablement over obstruction.
- Leadership capability, including:
- Distributed teams
- One-on-one mentorship
- Pair programming/hands-on culture
- Breaking silos
- Time-zone coordination
- Strong communication to explain technical trade-offs across domains:
- Developers
- Architects
- Security stakeholders
- Senior leadership
- Experience in regulated (especially financial services) or large-scale enterprise environments is preferable.
