Laboratory Technician Competitive salary + benefits + annual bonus Location: Welwyn Garden City Hours: Days only (Mon–Fri)
About the business & role
gap technical are partnering with a manufacturing business near Welwyn Garden City to recruit a Laboratory Technician to support materials testing and chemical process management.
Key Responsibilities
- Hydrogen content testing, tensile testing, and hardness assessments (including Vickers Micro-hardness and Rockwell)
- Metallographic testing (potting-up, polishing samples for grain size evaluation, bend tests)
- Chemical process monitoring:
- Daily/weekly analysis of chemical tanks, balancing solutions by calculating and recommending additions or new make-ups
- Managing laboratory consumable stock (ordering, quoting, product tracking)
- Supporting mechanical test preparation (punching, cutting, drilling samples)
- Operator overchecks and internal equipment calibration -participating in laboratory audits (both internal and external)
- Data management (archiving/test piece storage)
- Technical tasks: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), time management in dynamic environments

Requirements
Essential
- Degree in Materials Science (or equivalent)
- 3 years+ laboratory experience in materials testing
- Technical aptitude for equipment including hardness meters, chemical analysers, microscopes
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment
- Reliable time management
