Laboratory Analyst 2 – Smith+Nephew
About the Role
At Smith+Nephew, we design and manufacture technology that enhances quality of life. The Laboratory Analyst 2 plays a critical role in the Quality Assurance (QA) team, ensuring medical products and devices meet rigorous quality standards through testing, compliance, and regulatory oversight. This position covers analytical testing, method development, stability assessment, troubleshooting, and technical documentation across raw materials, intermediates, and finished products.
Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Contribute to the smooth operation of QA testing processes, ensuring customer care standards and regulatory compliance are maintained.
- Maintain, develop, and validate analytical methods and procedures for quality control.
Laboratory Operations
- Test materials and products using approved techniques, including:
- ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma)
- GC (Gas Chromatography)
- IR (Infrared Spectroscopy)
- UV-Vis (Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy)
- TOC (Total Organic Carbon) reporting
- Other chemical and analytical methods
- Ensure all laboratory equipment is calibrated, maintained, and compliant with scheduled systems.
- Deputise for the Laboratory Supervisor, maintaining service levels as required.
Quality & Compliance
- Review, interpret, approve, and report test results, ensuring compliance with specifications and trends.
- Support investigations into out-of-specification (OOS) and out-of-trend (OOT) results.
- Lead method validation, equipment validation, and change control activities within the lab.
- Evaluate technical failures and assess their potential impact on quality.
- Own, review, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and test methods.

Team & Technical Leadership
- Train and mentor junior laboratory analysts to ensure consistent, compliant workflows.
- Implement and review analytical methodologies, driving continuous improvement.
- Evaluate and introduce new analytical technologies where beneficial.
Administrative & Reporting
- Produce detailed, compliant technical reports for complex scientific tasks.
- Manage workloads effectively, meeting deadlines and labour slots.
- Maintain occupational health and safety standards in line with company policies.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong relationships with internal (e.g., manufacturing, engineering) and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate on sustainability (stability) testing protocols.
Requirements
- Essential:
- At least 3 years’ technical experience within Quality Assurance (QA), preferably in Life Sciences or Medical Devices
- BTEC or comparable science qualification, plus a science-based degree (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacology, etc.)
- Proficiency in analytical testing techniques (especially ICP/GC/IR)
- Strong analytical interpretation skills (identifying trends, conducting root cause analysis)
- Analytical expertise in data management and quality compliance systems
- Desirable:
- Experience handling statistical interpretations and root cause investigations
- Familiarity with GFPs (Good Manufacturing Practices) or ISO 13485 standards
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks (e.g., MDR, FDA, GMP)
