Laboratory Manager
A position exists in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics for a Laboratory Manager to play a pivotal role in the organisation and management of the GK Batchelor Laboratory.
About The Role
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Laboratory Manager to lead the operation and development of a world-class experimental research facility. This is a highly visible and influential role, providing technical leadership, strategic oversight, and operational management across a diverse portfolio of cutting-edge research and teaching activities.
Working closely with academic staff, researchers, students, and technical colleagues, you will oversee laboratory facilities, support the design and delivery of innovative experiments, manage specialist equipment and infrastructure, and ensure the highest standards of health, safety, and compliance. You will play a key role in shaping the future development of the Laboratory, leading refurbishment projects, enhancing facilities and services, and enabling outstanding research outcomes.
You will be involved in a broad and varied portfolio of projects spanning a wide range of experimental methods, from microscopy and robotics to large-scale fluid mechanics installations. A central part of the role is problem solving and the creative design of bespoke experimental setups, working in close collaboration with the GK Batchelor Laboratory workshop to turn ambitious research ideas into working experiments.

About The GK Batchelor Laboratory
The role holder is central to the successful operation of the GK Batchelor Laboratory, a world-class research facility spanning nearly 900m² and supporting a diverse range of experimental research, from the physics of microorganisms to large-scale industrial and environmental flows. Equipped with advanced imaging, laser, and experimental technologies, the Laboratory hosts multiple research groups, supports teaching activities, welcomes international visitors, and delivers more than 50 research projects each year.
About You
You will combine strong technical expertise with excellent leadership, project management, and problem-solving skills. You will thrive in a dynamic environment, providing expert advice, supporting a wide range of users, and ensuring the Laboratory remains a safe, efficient, and inspiring place for research, teaching, and collaboration.
You will hold a Master's or PhD in engineering or physical sciences or demonstratable equivalent experience. A minimum of three years of experience in academic research is also essential.
