About Nonacus

We’re an employee-owned company based in Birmingham in our 11th year of helping patients find cancer simply, quickly and accurately.

We research, design and manufacture all products from our Quinton HQ, having supplied over 50 million test kits to dozens of NHS sites, every major UK private healthcare group and exporting to 38 countries worldwide.

Purpose Statement

Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technician, Laboratory Operations will support laboratory operations by executing experiments as directed within assigned projects / services and actively participating in all laboratory and equipment maintenance duties.

Key Responsibilities

Work independently and/or as part of a team (upon completion of relevant training competencies) on one or more projects / services within the laboratory operations department. Generic responsibilities include:

  • Works on assignments / technical procedures within one or more projects / services, under supervision from the Laboratory Manager or the project / service lead.
  • Contributes to writing documentation, such as, but not limited to, COSHH, documents and procedures.
  • Supports laboratory operations activities, as directed by the Laboratory Manager.
  • Follows all company procedures in accordance with ISO13485 and ISO15189 regulations.
  • Contributes to lab management duties, such as but not limited to monitoring of consumables stock levels, equipment maintenance, waste disposal; as directed by the Laboratory Manager.
  • Collaborating with different teams and departments across the AGL group on cross-functional company goals.
  • Is flexible and proactive in handling assignments as and when required from various entities within the AGL group.

Working Hours

This role operates on a rotating shift pattern, with shifts falling between 07:00 and 21:00.

The successful candidate must be able to accommodate weekend working as part of a 5-day working pattern.

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry gained through higher education, such as BSc degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or related field.
  • Experience in sample and reagent handling, including following standard operating procedures to a high standard, preferably in a clinical or industry setting.
  • Good communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Demonstrable high levels of self-motivation, ambition, transparency, integrity and accountability.
  • Enjoy working towards challenging goals in a fast-moving environment where on-time delivery of results is a high priority.
  • Possess good organisational and team-working skills.
  • Competent use of computers, including Microsoft Office package.
  • Knowledge and experience of:
    • Aseptic technique.
    • Good laboratory practices, including safe sample and reagent handling.
    • Extraction of DNA / RNA techniques.
    • Principles of Next Generation Sequencing.
    • Real-time qPCR and PCR.
  • Able to sustain focus over long periods of time while performing repetitive tasks.
  • High attention to detail and good troubleshooting skills.
  • Proven track record of:
    • executing experiments in a molecular biology laboratory environment;
    • working in a molecular biology laboratory environment, including handling of reagents and samples; laboratory / equipment maintenance.
