Are you a reliable and enthusiastic biologist keen to work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment? Do you have extensive molecular and microbiology skills with meticulous attention to detail? An exciting opportunity is available to join the Davidson Lab at the School of Biological Sciences as a Laboratory Technician.
UEA has some of the most innovative and highly regarded centres for research in the UK. Our research explores how gut microbiome-host interactions shape wildlife biology, with a focus on birds. You will characterise gut microbiomes through microbial culturing, DNA extraction and whole-genome sequencing.
Role Overview:
As a Laboratory Technician you will be associated with a NERC Pushing the Frontiers grant to PI Dr Gabrielle Davidson, and Co-I Professor Lindsay Hall (University of Birmingham; Quadram Institute). In this role, you will be based at UEA and perform some laboratory work at the Quadram Institute. You will optimise culturing protocols, isolate microbial strains, perform in vitro assays, and preserve microbial strains for probiotic development. You will manage sample collections and databases, keep detailed laboratory notes, and report results to the PI and colleagues. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in departmental seminars and activities in a highly collegiate environment.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
